15OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the sex-specific effects of anthropometric profiles on the occurrence and severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS: We evaluated 151 patients with suspected OSA undergoing polysomnography and anthropometric measurements such as body mass index (BMI), neck and waist circumference (NC and WC), and waist-hip ratio (WHR). RESULTS: In men, NC (P = .006), WC (P = .035), and WHR (P = .003) were significantly increased in OSA and all were significantl
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the findings of computed tomography (CT) and histopathology of the bulla ethmoidalis as objective markers of bone remodeling in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). METHODS: Preoperative ostiomeatal unit (OMU) scans and histopathologic findings of the bulla ethmoidalis were performed on 23 patients (39 sides) undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery for CRS. Lund-Mackay scores and Hounsfield units (HU) of the bulla were checked in coronal CT scans. The pathologist graded the severitie
Regardless of CRS, maxillary sinus volume decreased with older age and increased with alveolar bone loss. Regarding craniofacial anatomical features, CRS may have an effect on malocclusion in adults.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impact of olfactory dysfunction on quality of life (QOL) and psychological status in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted from January 2011 to May 2012 with 130 patients with septal deviation (SD) (n = 59) and CRSwNP (n = 71). All patients underwent computed tomography (CT), allergy tests, and sniffin' stick olfactory test. Anosmia was defined by Threshold-Discrimination-Identifi
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The aim of this study was to investigate the surgical completeness of robotic total thyroidectomy compared with conventional open thyroidectomy. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective, case-control study. METHODS: We studied 245 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma who underwent total thyroidectomy and postoperative radioactive iodine (RAI) ablation. Of these, 62 patients underwent robotic thyroidectomy by a gasless unilateral axillo-breast (GUAB) or axillary (GUA) approach, and
OBJECTIVES: Budesonide nasal irrigation was introduced recently for postoperative management of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. The safety and therapeutic effectiveness of this procedure is becoming accepted by many physicians. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of postoperative steroid irrigation in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis and asthma. METHODS: This prospective study involved 12 chronic rhinosinusitis patients with nasal polyps and asthma who received ora
BACKGROUND: The ciliary epithelial cells in the paranasal sinuses produce nasal nitric oxide (NO) continuously and plays a variety of roles in the paranasal sinuses. The purpose of this study was to assess whether we can use the levels of nasal NO (nNO) and exhaled NO (eNO) as a tool for evaluation in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) with nasal polyp patients. METHODS: We used chemiluminescent NO analyzer to measure nNO and eNO among normal controls (32) and CRS with polyp (30) and CRS with polyp an
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To investigate the significance of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in vestibular neuritis. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective, case-control study. METHODS: The study subjects were patients who received treatment for vestibular neuritis between January 2009 and December 2013, and a control group composed of 70 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects who received laboratory testing as part of a routine health checkup. The subjects underwent
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the necessity of preserving the posterior branch of the great auricular nerve during parotidectomy. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Forty-six patients undergoing parotidectomy were prospectively analyzed. Twenty-four patients had preservation of the posterior branch of the great auricular nerve; in the remaining 22 patients the nerve was sacrificed. A sensory index score was defined as the area involved multiplied by the intensity grade of sensory loss. Quality-of-life was eval
OBJECTIVE: Prophylactic central neck dissection (CND) in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) remains controversial. If the presence of central lymph node metastasis could be assessed preoperatively or intraoperatively, unnecessary CND could be avoided. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of intraoperative determination of central lymph node metastasis by the surgeon using palpation and inspection in clinically node-negative PTC. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTING: University t
BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term voice function after robotic thyroidectomy in comparison with conventional transcervical thyroidectomy. METHODS: We prospectively evaluated the voice functions of 54 patients with thyroid nodules who underwent robotic thyroidectomy by a gasless unilateral axillary or axillo-breast approach and of 70 patients who underwent conventional thyroidectomy. Subjective voice symptom score (VSS) was evaluated in questionnaires before thyr
Elevated local IgE is a common feature of AR in children and adults. Local measures in NAR showed naïve state of immune response which disagree with the hypothesis of local allergic rhinitis. Children showed intense local inflammation and close local-systemic interactions compared to adults supporting pediatric AR as a distinct feature.
