15PURPOSE: Reduction in blood loss during surgery stabilizes hemodynamic status and aids in recovery after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). In this study, the authors examined whether different administration routes of tranexamic acid (TNA) might affect the amount of blood loss after TKA. METHODS: A total of 150 patients were prospectively allocated to each of the three groups (intravenous, intra-articular, and placebo group) and underwent unilateral TKA. During closing the operative wound, TNA (1.5
The present study suggested that robot-assisted short stem THA could increase the accuracy of stem alignment, improve leg length equality, and help reduce the risk of intraoperative femoral fracture as compared with manual rasping. However, the clinical outcome scores did not differ between the two groups at the time of short-term follow-up. Long-term follow-up is needed to determine whether there will be a long-term clinical relevance of robot-assisted implantation of short femoral stems in THA
We compared the accuracy of the growth remaining method of assessing leg-length discrepancy (LLD) with the straight-line graph method, the multiplier method and their variants. We retrospectively reviewed the records of 44 patients treated by percutaneous epiphysiodesis for LLD. All were followed up until maturity. We used the modified Green-Anderson growth-remaining method (Method 1) to plan the timing of epiphysiodesis. Then we presumed that the other four methods described below were used pre
PURPOSE: To compare the surgical outcomes of the two different ankle stabilization techniques. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial aimed to compare the outcomes of the modified Broström procedure with [calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) group] or without CFL repair [anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) only group]. Of the 50 patients randomly assigned to two groups, 43 were followed up prospectively for ≥ 2 years (CFL group: 22 patients, 36.6 ± 13.1 months; ATFL Only group: 21 patients, 35.3 ±
PURPOSE: To assess the value of repeat ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (US-FNA) in nodules with benign cytological diagnosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One-hundred-and-eighty-seven patients undergoing repeat US-FNA were included after a benign cytological diagnosis had been made by the initial US-FNA. They were divided into a re-aspiration group, who underwent repeat US-FNA within 6 months for a discordant pathological and clinico-radiological result, and a follow-up aspiration group, who u
Humeral lengthening was relatively effective and safe. Careful attention will be needed to avoid the occurrence of limb length discrepancy or malalignment in crossed lengthening.
The purpose of this study was to describe relevant canine brain structures as seen on T2-weighted images following magnetic resonance (MR) imaging at 7 T and to compare the results with imaging at 1.5 T. Imaging was performed on five healthy laboratory beagle dogs using 1.5 and 7 T clinical scanners. At 1.5 T, spin echo images were acquired, while gradient echo images were acquired at 3 T. Image quality and conspicuity of anatomic structures were evaluated qualitatively by direct comparison of t
BACKGROUND: We retrospectively reviewed the outcomes of desmoid tumor (DT) patients treated by surgical excision. METHODS: Among 155 consecutive patients, 119 patients satisfied our inclusion criteria. The mean follow-up duration was 82 months. Age, gender, location, size, depth, resection margin, adjuvant radiotherapy, and excision history were analyzed for the outcomes. RESULTS: The recurrence-free survival (RFS) rates were 75% at 5 years and 72% at 10 years. Twenty-seven (93.1%) out of 29 rec
A large number of studies have focused on the role of substance P (SP) and the neurokinin-1 receptor (NK1R) in the pathogenesis of a variety of medical conditions. This review provides an overview of the role of the SP-NK1R pathway in the pathogenesis of musculoskeletal disorders and the evidence for its role as a therapeutic target for these disorders, which are major public health problems in most countries. To summarize, the brief involvement of SP may affect tendon healing in an acute injury
BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFEs) can be idiopathic or atypical (associated with renal failure, radiation therapy, and endocrine disorders). It is important to estimate the likelihood that atypical SCFE shows different clinical and radiographic characteristics and complications with typical SCFEs. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 53 patients (66 hips) with SCFEs managed between 1995 and 2016. Sex, age, weight, height, the duration of symptoms the laterality of the slip, a
PURPOSE: (1) To describe ankle strength and postural stability in patients with chronic lateral ankle instability and (2) to analyse the correlation between deficits in ankle strength and postural stability. METHODS: Results of preoperative isokinetic and balance tests in 203 patients whose contralateral ankle was normal were retrospectively reviewed. Isokinetic peak torque values of eversion and inversion at 2 angular velocities (30°/s and 120°/s) were measured in the injured and normal ankles.
BACKGROUND: The substance P-neurokinin 1 receptor pathway has been proposed as a therapeutic target for tendinopathy. However, there is a lack of evidence regarding its practical applications. PURPOSE: To investigate the therapeutic effects of substance P inhibitor (SPI) on inflamed tenocytes in vitro and in a collagenase-induced rat model of tendinopathy in vivo. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: We analyzed the mRNA levels of inflammatory (cyclooxygenase [COX]-2 and interleuk
