INTRODUCTION: Children with allergies are at greater risk of becoming sensitized to allergenic pollens in response to environmental changes. This study investigated the relationship between changes in pollination associated with meteorologic changes and the sensitization rates of children to tree pollen allergens in the metropolitan area of Seoul, Korea. METHODS: The study population consisted of 8,295 children who visited the pediatric allergy clinics at Hanyang University Seoul and Guri Hospit

Local Immune Responses in Children and Adults with Allergic and Nonallergic Rhinitis
Kyung Suk Lee, Jinho Yu, Dahee Shim, Hana Choi, Man-Young Jang, Kyung Rae Kim, Jae‐Hoon Choi, Seok Hyun Cho
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Elevated local IgE is a common feature of AR in children and adults. Local measures in NAR showed naïve state of immune response which disagree with the hypothesis of local allergic rhinitis. Children showed intense local inflammation and close local-systemic interactions compared to adults supporting pediatric AR as a distinct feature.

SJR Q1Allergy Asthma and Immunology ResearchOA

Breast-feeding was not found to be associated with an occurrence of AD in young children. Rather, parents with histories of allergic diseases tended to prefer breast-feeding and extend its duration. To clarify the role of breast-feeding in the development of AD, a nation-wide prospective study is needed.

SJR Q1Frontiers in Public HealthOA

Purpose This study aimed to investigate associations of socioeconomic status (SES) with asthma exacerbation and asthma-related hospital utilization factors among children with asthma in the Republic of Korea. Methods This study retrospectively analyzed population-level data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service, collected from 2013 through 2019. SES was classified into five categories according to the national health insurance premiums quantiles (0 [lowest] to 4 [highest]). The hazar

Background. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease, but only few studies involved samples of children and adolescents that are representative of the entire Korean population. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and risk factors of AD among children and adolescents in Korea by using nationally representative data. Methods. We used data from the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2010 and retrospectively evaluated 2,116 children a

Our study revealed that AR was more prevalent than NAR and that 41.2% of AR presented with moderate-severe disease in Korean pediatric populations. Sinusitis was the most common comorbidity, and sleep disturbance was associated with the severity of rhinitis. The majority of AR patients were sensitized to HDMs in preschool ages. Further studies, including nationwide and longitudinal data, will help understand the relationship between these diseases.

SJR Q2BioMed Research InternationalOA

Anaphylaxis is a serious life-threatening allergic disease in children. This study is aimed at determining the characteristics of pediatric patients who experienced anaphylaxis along with treatments administered in order to determine the usefulness of tryptase level assessment as a marker of anaphylaxis in Korean children. A total of 107 patients who were diagnosed with anaphylaxis in a single pediatric emergency center over a 3-year period were included in the study. Patient clinical characteri

Allergy Asthma & Respiratory Disease

Allergic rhinitis is the most common chronic rhinitis in children and is the most common allergic disease in childhood and adolescence in Korea and most countries around the world. In this review article, we have summarized some of the research articles on allergic rhinitis that have been published in the Korean Academy of Pediatric Allergy and Respiratory Disease (KAPARD) Journals so far in order to celebrate and look back on the 30th anniversary of the KAPARD. Over the past 30 years, the mem

SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

Background/Objectives: Respiratory viral infections are a major cause of asthma exacerbations. However, studies examining the association between symptoms, signs, treatments, outcomes of asthma exacerbations, and various respiratory viruses in children are limited. This study aims to investigate the association between respiratory viral infections and clinical symptoms and signs, treatment, and hospital admission in children with asthma exacerbations visiting the pediatric emergency department.

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Rotavirus is a common cause of diarrhea worldwide, and vaccination prevents rotaviral gastroenteritis. Since the rotavirus vaccine was introduced in Korea in 2007, the prevalence of rotaviral gastroenteritis has decreased. However, little is known on the economic burden of rotavirus infection and its variations in Korea. Here, we estimated the economic costs of rotavirus infection from 2009 to 2012 using nationwide data from the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) claims. Socioeconomic cost
