15Ultrafast two-dimensional infrared (2D-IR) vibrational echo spectroscopy can probe structural dynamics under thermal equilibrium conditions on time scales ranging from femtoseconds to approximately 100 ps and longer. One of the important uses of 2D-IR spectroscopy is to monitor the dynamical evolution of a molecular system by reporting the time dependent frequency fluctuations of an ensemble of vibrational probes. The vibrational frequency-frequency correlation function (FFCF) is the connection
Ultrafast two-dimensional infrared (2D-IR) vibrational echo spectroscopy can probe the fast structural evolution of molecular systems under thermal equilibrium conditions. Structural dynamics are tracked by observing the time evolution of the 2D-IR spectrum, which is caused by frequency fluctuations of vibrational mode(s) excited during the experiment. However, there are a variety of effects that can produce line shape distortions and prevent the correct determination of the frequency-frequency
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been deployed in a wide range of energy-storage applications and helped to revolutionize technological development. Recently, a lithium ion battery that uses superconcentrated salt water as its electrolyte has been developed. However, the role of water in facilitating fast ion transport in such highly concentrated electrolyte solutions is not fully understood yet. Here, femtosecond IR spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations are used to show that bulk-lik
Lithium cation is the charge carrier in lithium-ion battery. Electrolyte solution in lithium-ion battery is usually based on mixed solvents consisting of polar carbonates with different aliphatic chains. Despite various experimental evidences indicating that lithium ion forms a rigid and stable solvation sheath through electrostatic interactions with polar carbonates, both the lithium solvation structure and more importantly fluctuation dynamics and functional role of carbonate solvent molecules
Ultrafast two-dimensional (2D) infrared vibrational echo experiments and theory are used to examine chemical exchange between solute-solvent complexes and the free solute for the solute phenol and three solvent complex partners, p-xylene, benzene, and bromobenzene, in mixed solvents of the partner and CCl4. The experiments measure the time evolution of the 2D spectra of the hydroxyl (OD) stretching mode of the phenol. The time-dependent 2D spectra are analyzed using time-dependent diagrammatic p
Two donor-π-spacer-acceptor (D-π-A) organic dyes were designed as photochromic dyes with the same π-spacer and acceptor but different donors, based on their electron-donating strength. Various structural, electronic, and optical properties, chemical reactivity parameters, and certain crucial factors that affect short-circuit current density (Jsc) and open circuit voltage (Voc) were investigated computationally using density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory. The tran
Abstract Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have the potential to deliver a greater specific capacity than any commercially used lithium battery. However, excessive dendrite growth and low Coulombic efficiencies (CEs) are major hurdles preventing the commercialization of LMBs. In this study, two different salts, lithium difluorophosphate (LiDFP) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), are chosen for use in concentrated electrolytic systems. By mixing salts with vastly different cati
The origin of the vibrational coupling that was observed between the CC and CN stretching modes of acetonitrile by doubly vibrationally enhanced (DOVE) IR–IR–Vis four-wave-mixing (IIV-FWM) spectroscopy is investigated by various ab initio calculations including DFT(B3LYP), HF, and MP2 methods with the same baisis set, 6-311++G**. The linear and nonlinear susceptibilities of the combination bands and cross peaks are numerically calculated and compared with the experimental values, and the agreeme
Ultrafast 2D-IR vibrational echo experiments, IR pump-probe experiments, and FT-IR spectroscopy of the hydroxyl stretch of phenol-OD in three solvents, CCl4, mesitylene (1, 3, 5 trimethylbenzene), and the mixed solvent of mesitylene and CCl4 (0.83 mole fraction CCl4), are used to study solute-solvent dynamics via observation of spectral diffusion. Phenol forms a complex with Mesitylene. In the mesitylene solution, there is only complexed phenol; in the CCl4 solution, there is only uncomplexed ph
In this article, we report the facile synthesis of metal-free dyes 6 and 7, their solution-based optical and redox properties and their use as sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Our studies indicate that the addition of the second thiophene unit in dye 7, decreases the oxidation and reduction potential and consequently the band gap of the molecule compared to 6. Furthermore, increasing the length of the conjugated spacer also affects on the properties of the DSSCs, with dye 7 pro
Hydrogen bonds formed between C-H and various hydrogen bond acceptors play important roles in the structure of proteins and organic crystals, and the mechanisms of C-H bond cleavage reactions. Chloroform, a C-H hydrogen bond donor, can form weak hydrogen-bonded complexes with acetone and with dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). When chloroform is dissolved in a mixed solvent consisting of acetone and DMSO, both types of hydrogen-bonded complexes exist. The two complexes, chloroform-acetone and chloroform-
