15The association between acute kidney injury (AKI) and long-term renal function after radical nephrectomy has not been evaluated fully. We reviewed 558 cases of radical nephrectomy. Postoperative AKI was defined by the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) serum creatinine criteria. Values of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were collected up to 36 months (median 35 months) after surgery. The primary outcome was new-onset chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 3a or higher or a
BACKGROUND: Inflammation is associated with unfavorable clinical outcomes after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). We evaluated the relationship between postoperative neutrophil-to-albumin ratio (NAR) and unfavorable clinical outcomes (modified Rankin score ≥ 3) at hospital discharge in aSAH patients. METHODS: Five hundred sixty aSAH patients undergoing surgical or endovascular treatment were included in this retrospective study. Patients were initially allocated to high (n=247) or low (
OBJECTIVES: Catheter malposition after subclavian venous catheterization (SVC) is not uncommon and can lead to serious complications. This study hypothesized that the left access is superior to the right access in terms of catheter malposition after ultrasound-guided infraclavicular SVC due to the asymmetry of the bilateral brachiocephalic veins. DESIGN: Parallel-armed randomized controlled trial. SETTING: A tertiary referral hospital in Korea. PATIENTS: Patients 20-79 years old who were schedul
In patients with cervical spine immobilisation, tracheal intubation devices other than a direct laryngoscope are frequently used to facilitate tracheal intubation and avoid related complications. In this randomised controlled trial, we compared videolaryngoscopic and fibrescopic tracheal intubation in patients with a cervical collar. Tracheal intubation was performed using either a videolaryngoscope with a non-channelled Macintosh blade (n = 166) or a flexible fibrescope (n = 164) in patients ha
BACKGROUND: Cerebral vasospasm after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (ASAH) is a serious complication and has a strong relationship with systemic inflammatory responses. Given previously reported relationships between leukocytosis and anemia with ASAH-related cerebral vasospasm, this study examined the association between the preoperative white blood cell-to-hemoglobin ratio (WHR) and postoperative symptomatic cerebral vasospasm (SCV) in patients with ASAH. METHODS: Demographic, preoperative
BACKGROUND: Erector spinae plane block (ESPB) can has been used for analgesia after lumbar spine surgery. However, its effect on postoperative quality of recovery (QoR) remains underexplored in patients undergoing transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) or oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF). This study hypothesized that ESPB would improve postoperative QoR in this patient cohort. METHODS: Patients undergoing TLIF or OLIF were randomized into ESPB (n=38) and control groups (n=38). In th
PURPOSE: Applying a cervical collar during videolaryngoscopic intubation can increase the lifting force required to achieve adequate glottic view, potentially increasing cervical spine motion. We aimed to compared cervical spine motion during videolaryngoscopic intubation between applying only the posterior piece (posterior-only group) and applying both the anterior and posterior pieces (anterior-posterior group) in patients wearing a cervical collar. METHODS: We conducted a dingle-centre, paral
PURPOSE: Channelled blades have the advantage of avoiding stylet use and potential airway injury during videolaryngoscopic intubation. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of channelled Macintosh-type blades has not yet been fully established. We sought to assess the utility of channelled Macintosh-type blades for videolaryngoscopic intubation under cervical spine immobilization. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled noninferiority trial in neurosurgical patients with a difficult airway simul
BACKGROUND: During videolaryngoscopic intubation, direct epiglottis elevation provides a higher percentage of glottic opening score than indirect epiglottis elevation. In this randomized controlled trial, we compared cervical spine movement during videolaryngoscopic intubation under manual in-line stabilization between the two glottis exposure methods. METHODS: Videolaryngoscopic intubation under manual in-line stabilization was performed using C-MAC® D-blade: direct (n = 51) and indirect (n = 5
Cardiac troponin levels can be elevated without myocardial injury in patients with renal impairment. However, the prognostic value of elevated troponin levels after cardiac surgery has not been well evaluated in patients with renal impairment. We evaluated the relationship between postoperative troponin levels and mortality following cardiac surgery according to preoperative renal function.Among 3661 patients underwent cardiac surgery between March 2005 and December 2015, 1909 patients were anal
BACKGROUND: Strict blood pressure control can be used to prevent or treat cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome. This study investigated whether scalp nerve block (SNB) is associated with a reduced risk of postoperative symptomatic cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome (SCHS) by reducing postoperative blood pressure in adult patients who underwent combined revascularization surgery for moyamoya disease. METHODS: Patients were retrospectively divided into the SNB (n=167) and control (n=221) groups dependin
BACKGROUND: Inflammation plays a role in the pathogenesis of cerebral infarction. Postoperative symptomatic cerebral infarction (SCI) is a complication after revascularization surgery in patients with moyamoya disease (MMD). We investigated the association between the systemic-immune-inflammation index (SII) and postoperative SCI during hospital stay in such patients. METHODS: Perioperative data were retrospectively obtained from 681 MMD patients who underwent revascularization surgery. SII cuto
