Architectural and Mechanical Properties of the Black Coral Skeleton (Coelenterata: Antipatharia): A Comparison of Two Species
Kyung‐A Kim, Walter M. Goldberg, George T. Taylor
SJR Q1Biological Bulletin

Black coral skeletons are laminated composites, composed primarily of chitin fibrils and non-fibrillar protein. This paper examines mechanical properties of the composite and the architecture of the chitin component. Two species are shown to differ significantly in their tensile strength and fibril structure. The skeleton of Antipathes salix, a Caribbean species of commercial value, is stiffer, harder, darker, more dense, and more hydrophobic than Antipathes fiordensis from New Zealand. The chit

Surgery Versus Nonsurgery Option for Scissors Bite Treatment
Kyung‐A Kim, Jae-Jung Yu, Yu Chen, Su-Jung Kim, Seong‐Hun Kim, Gerald Nelson
SJR Q2Journal of Craniofacial Surgery

In scissors bite cases, a good diagnosis will help the clinician to decide whether treatment should involve orthognathic surgery. The authors have shown a case that was corrected with surgery and a case that was corrected using TSAD anchors. Treatment planning must include evaluation of the basal arch width of maxilla and mandible in class I occlusion, any skeletal asymmetry concomitant with a mandibular shift, the inclinations or atypical eruption degree of the posterior teeth, and the number o

Targeted presurgical decompensation in patients with yaw-dependent facial asymmetry
Kyung‐A Kim, Jiwon Lee, Jeong-Ho Park, Byoung‐Ho Kim, Hyo‐Won Ahn, Su-Jung Kim
SJR Q1The Korean Journal of OrthodonticsOA

Facial asymmetry can be classified into the rolling-dominant type (R-type), translation-dominant type (T-type), yawing-dominant type (Y-type), and atypical type (A-type) based on the distorted skeletal components that cause canting, translation, and yawing of the maxilla and/or mandible. Each facial asymmetry type represents dentoalveolar compensations in three dimensions that correspond to the main skeletal discrepancies. To obtain sufficient surgical correction, it is necessary to analyze the

Asymmetric nasomaxillary expansion induced by tooth‐bone‐borne expander producing differential craniofacial changes
Kyung‐A Kim, Song Hee Oh, Byoung‐Ho Kim, Su‐Jung Kim
SJR Q1Orthodontics and Craniofacial Research

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate three-dimensional (3D) craniofacial changes induced by a non-surgical tooth-bone-borne rapid palatal expander (TBB-RPE) according to the symmetrical pattern of expansion, to investigate the 3D changes between the sides in patients with asymmetric expansion, and to identify the related factors of asymmetric expansion. SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION: Sixty-six patients (mean age: 19.3 ± 5.7 years) treated with TBB-RPE were divided into a symmetric expansion group (Group S, n

Kyung‐A Kim, Soo-Bong Chung, Eun-Young Hawng, Seung-Hyun Noh, Kwon‐Ho Song, Hanna-Hyun Kim, Cheorl‐Ho Kim, Young‐Guk Park
SJR Q1Journal of Periodontal & Implant ScienceOA

The expression of MMP-2 and -9 might contribute to periodontal physiological and pathological processes, and the degree of MMP-9 expression and activity are predictive indicators relevant to the progression of periodontitis.

Craniofacial anatomical determinants of pediatric sleep‐disordered breathing: A comprehensive review
Kyung‐A Kim, Su‐Jung Kim, Audrey Yoon
SJR Q1Journal of ProsthodonticsOA

PURPOSE: This narrative review aims to elucidate the anatomical features of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in children. By identifying key structures and intervening proactively, we seek to alter craniofacial growth patterns and improve functional outcomes for SDB children. METHODS: The literature on pediatric sleep-disordered breathing (PSDB), pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), anatomical predispositions, and the relationship between skeletal deformity and PSDB was examined using PubMed

Recovery of multiple impacted maxillary teeth in a hyperdivergent Class I patient using Temporary Skeletal Anchorage Devices and augmented corticotomy
Kyung‐A Kim, Hyeon‐Shik Hwang, Kyu‐Rhim Chung, Seong‐Hun Kim, Gerald Nelson
SJR Q1The Angle OrthodontistOA

Treatment of multiple impacted teeth is challenging. Three-dimensional treatment planning can help in delivering a better outcome. This case report presents a patient with an incomplete dental transposition between the canine and lateral incisor of the maxillary right side associated with the impaction of a dilacerated right central incisor. Using a two-stage surgical exposure and augmented corticotomy, the patient's occlusion and smile esthetics were significantly improved, and Class I occlusal

SJR Q1Orthodontics and Craniofacial Research

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the internal structure of the nasomaxillary complex, including the maxillary sinus, nasal cavity and nasal septum according to the facial asymmetry pattern and to evaluate its correlation with external maxillomandibular asymmetry in Class III patients based on cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Facial asymmetry was analysed in a total of 100 Class III patients aged 16 years or older using CBCT scans. Patients were categorized into s

Short-term changes in muscle activity and jaw movement patterns after orthognathic surgery in skeletal Class III patients with facial asymmetry
Kyung‐A Kim, Hong-Sik Park, Sooyeon Lee, Su‐Jung Kim, Seung‐Hak Baek, Hyo‐Won Ahn
SJR Q1The Korean Journal of OrthodonticsOA

In skeletal Class III patients with facial asymmetry, the EMG activity characteristics recovered to presurgical levels within 7 to 8 months after the surgery. Correction of the asymmetry caused limitation in jaw movement in terms of both ROM and ACP on the non-deviated side.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association of three single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of growth hormone receptor (GHR) gene with mandibular prognathism (MP) and relationships between mandibular morphology and GHR gene SNPs in the Korean population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 325 subjects were divided into two groups based on sagittal maxillomandibular relationship by the lateral cephalography: the MP and control groups. From the SNPs in the GHR gene, three SNPs (rs6180, rs6182 and rs618
