15A highly stretchable metal electrode is developed via the solution-processing of very long (>100 μm) metallic nanowires and subsequent percolation network formation via low-temperature nanowelding. The stretchable metal electrode from very long metal nanowires demonstrated high electrical conductivity (∼9 ohm sq−1) and mechanical compliance (strain > 460%) at the same time. This method is expected to overcome the performance limitation of the current stretchable electronics such as graphene, car
The future electronics will be soft, flexible and even stretchable to be more human friendly in the form of wearable computers. However, conventional electronic materials are usually brittle. Recently, carbon based materials are intensively investigated as a good candidate for flexible electronics but with limited mechanical and electrical performances. Metal is still the best material for electronics with great electrical properties but with poor transparency and mechanical performance. Here we
Abstract As an alternative to the brittle and expensive indium tin oxide (ITO) transparent conductor, a very simple, room‐temperature nanosoldering method of Ag nanowire percolation network is developed with conducting polymer to demonstrate highly flexible and even stretchable transparent conductors. The drying conducting polymer on Ag nanowire percolation network is used as a nanosoldering material inducing strong capillary‐force‐assisted stiction of the nanowires to other nanowires or to the
A hyper-stretchable and deformable elastic-composite generator is developed using a piezoelectric nanocomposite composed of (1−x){Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3}–x{PbTiO3} microparticles, carbon nanotubes, a silicone rubber matrix, and very long silver (Ag) nanowire percolation network electrodes. To date, this nanogenerator sets world records for output performance, strain capacity, mechanical stability, and commercial feasibility in the research field for stretchable and deformable piezoelectric energy harv
As is frequently seen in sci‐fi movies, future electronics are expected to ultimately be in the form of wearable electronics. To realize wearable electronics, the electric components should be soft, flexible, and even stretchable to be human‐friendly. An important step is presented toward realization of wearable electronics by developing a hierarchical multiscale hybrid nanocomposite for highly flexible, stretchable, or transparent conductors. The hybrid nanocomposite combines the enhanced mecha
In this research, we developed a novel successive multistep growth method to synthesize very long silver nanowires (AgNWs) over several hundred micrometers (maximum length of 400–500 μm) and performed a systematic parameter study to optimize the dimension of nanowires synthesized at a large scale. It was demonstrated that AgNWs continued to grow through successive multistep growth as long as Ag ion rich conditions were maintained continuously. We successfully attained an extremely high aspect ra
In this paper, a new, simple capacitive tilt sensor with a metallic ball is proposed. The proposed tilt sensor has only two electrodes and a metallic ball, and this design assists in managing the inherent contact problem in measuring tilt angles. Capacitive sensing, compared with other types of tilt sensor, has many advantages such as simplicity, noncontact measurement, long-throw linear displacement, and sub-micron plate spacing. Its design and fabrication process are significantly simpler than
Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowire forest is applied for the electronics cooling by means of pool boiling heat transfer. The forest was composed of lengthwise grown backbone and branched nanowires, which were highly dense and tree-like hierarchical structures. The platinum heater and resistance temperature detector were fabricated by microfabrication on one side of silicon chips and nanowire forest was synthesized on the other side. The superheat and heat flux were evaluated at steady state while the vol

D. Lee, S. H. Ko, and co-workers develop an alternative to rigid ITO transparent conductors. On page 4171, conducting polymer-assisted nanosoldering of Ag nanowires allows them to develop nanowire percolation networks, which form highly flexible and stretchable transparent conductors. A large area transparent conductor and a flexible touch panel on a non-flat surface are fabricated, demonstrating the possibility of cost-effective mass production as well as the applicability of these networks to

A novel micro cell incubator is described in this paper. pH of animal cell culture media must be tightly controlled, and this is accomplished by supplying defined concentration of carbon dioxide. In order to fabricate a small self-contained carbon dioxide supply unit, we adopted chemical production of carbon dioxide rather than compressed storage of the gas which requires huge tank. Carbon dioxide can be chemically produced by pyrolysis of sodium bicarbonate. The produced gas passes through a th
