Coleridge’s dream poem, along with Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” and Delmore Schwartz’ “In Dreams Begin Responsibilities” may be considered one of the seminal w
Beginning with responses from contemporary American poets to a question (How have things changed?) about a single work, Langston Hughes’ 1935 poem “Let America Be America Again,” the study explores Hughes’ dream poems as methods of integration. Close reading reveals how such integrations extend beyond the social, as in the integration of the unconscious and conscious, along with further desegregations of waking and dreaming life, individual and collective, rich and poor, there and here, then and
This paper documents, in transcript form—with some added commentary, references and reflections—a discussion, poetry reading and question-answer period, moderated by Dan Disney, which took place at the Modern British and American Poetry Society conference held at Yonsei University on October 6, 2018. It unfolds in three sections: in Part I, after introductory remarks by Disney, I discuss my background and development as a poet through apprenticeships with several poetry teachers, most notably Ke
