Oligodendrocytes regulate presynaptic properties and neurotransmission through BDNF signaling in the mouse brainstem
Mi‐Ae Jang, Elizabeth Gould, Jie Xu, Eun Jung Kim, Jun Hee Kim
SJR Q1eLifeOA

Neuron–glia communication contributes to the fine-tuning of synaptic functions. Oligodendrocytes near synapses detect and respond to neuronal activity, but their role in synapse development and plasticity remains largely unexplored. We show that oligodendrocytes modulate neurotransmitter release at presynaptic terminals through secretion of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Oligodendrocyte-derived BDNF functions via presynaptic tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrkB) to ensure fast, reliabl

Serum-free cultures of C2C12 cells show different muscle phenotypes which can be estimated by metabolic profiling
Mi‐Ae Jang, Jana Scheffold, Lisa Marie Røst, Hyejeong L. Cheon, Per Bruheim
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

In vitro skeletal muscle cell production is emerging in the field of artificial lab-grown meat as alternative future food. Currently, there is an urgent paradigm shift towards a serum replacement culture system. Surprisingly, little is known about the impact of serum-free culture on skeletal muscle cells to date. Therefore, we performed metabolic profiling of the C2C12 myoblasts and myotubes in serum-free mediums (B27, AIM-V) and compared it with conventional serum supplementation culture. Furth

Distribution of Nontuberculous Mycobacteria by Multigene Sequence-Based Typing and Clinical Significance of Isolated Strains
Mi‐Ae Jang, Won‐Jung Koh, Hee Jae Huh, Su‐Young Kim, Kyeongman Jeon, Chang‐Seok Ki, Nam Yong Lee
SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MicrobiologyOA

Species identification of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) is challenging due to the increasing number of identified NTM species and the lack of standardized testing strategies. The objectives of this study were to investigate the distribution of NTM species recovered from respiratory specimens by multigene sequence-based typing and to evaluate the clinical significance of identified species. Two hundred thirty-two consecutive clinical NTM isolates were subjected to sequencing of multiple genes

The impact of serum-free culture on HEK293 cells: From the establishment of suspension and adherent serum-free adaptation cultures to the investigation of growth and metabolic profiles

SJR Q1Frontiers in Bioengineering and BiotechnologyOA

Serum-free cultures are preferred for application in clinical cell therapy and facilitate the purification processes of bioproducts, such as vaccines and recombinant proteins. It can replace traditional cell culture - eliminating potential issues posed by animal-derived serum supplementation, such as lot to lot variation and risks of pathogen infection from the host animal. However, adapting cells to serum-free conditions can be challenging and time-consuming, and is cell line and medium depende

Recent insights regarding the molecular basis of myeloproliferative neoplasms
Mi‐Ae Jang, Chul Won Choi
SJR Q2The Korean Journal of Internal MedicineOA

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are a heterogeneous group of clonal disorders characterized by the overproduction of mature blood cells that have an increased risk of thrombosis and progression to acute myeloid leukemia. Next-generation sequencing studies have provided key insights regarding the molecular mechanisms of MPNs. MPN driver mutations in genes associated with the JAK-STAT pathway include JAK2 V617F, JAK2 exon 12 mutations and mutations in MPL, CALR, and CSF3R. Cooperating driver g

On the relevance of cocaine detection in a fingerprint

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

The finding that drugs and metabolites can be detected from fingerprints is of potential relevance to forensic science and as well as toxicology and clinical testing. However, discriminating between dermal contact and ingestion of drugs has never been verified experimentally. The inability to interpret the result of finding a drug or metabolite in a fingerprint has prevented widespread adoption of fingerprints in drug testing and limits the probative value of detecting drugs in fingermarks. Coexistence of glutamatergic spine synapses and shaft synapses in substantia nigra dopamine neurons

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Dopamine neurons of the substantia nigra have long been believed to have multiple aspiny dendrites which receive many glutamatergic synaptic inputs from several regions of the brain. But, here, using high-resolution two-photon confocal microscopy in the mouse brain slices, we found a substantial number of common dendritic spines in the nigral dopamine neurons including thin, mushroom, and stubby types of spines. However, the number of dendritic spines of the dopamine neurons was approximately fi

SJR Q2Annals of Laboratory MedicineOA

BACKGROUND: Medical laboratories play a central role in health care. Many laboratories are taking a more focused and stringent approach to quality system management. In Korea, laboratory standardization efforts undertaken by the Korean Laboratory Accreditation Program (KLAP) and the Korean External Quality Assessment Scheme (KEQAS) may have facilitated an improvement in laboratory performance, but there are no fundamental studies demonstrating that laboratory standardization is effective. We ana

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

PURPOSE: Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a rare cerebrovascular disorder characterized by stenosis of the internal carotid arteries with compensatory development of collateral vessels. Although a founder variant of RNF213, p.Arg4810Lys (c.14429G>A, rs112735431), is a major genetic risk factor for MMD in East Asians, the frequency and disease susceptibility of other variants in this gene remain largely unknown. In the present study, we investigated the association of RNF213 variants with MMD in Korean
