AIM: The purpose of the present study was to examine the agreement of segmental multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (SMF-BIA) for the assessment of whole-body and appendicular fat mass (FM) and lean soft tissue mass (LSTM) compared with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in a community-dwelling Japanese older population. METHODS: The study population included 551 community-dwelling Japanese older adults (241 men and 310 women) aged between 65 and 87 years. Agreement between SMF-B

PURPOSE: The purpose of the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study (KFACS) is to initiate a nationwide, population-based prospective cohort study of older adults living in the community to assess their frailty status and explore transitions between frailty states over time in Korea. PARTICIPANTS: The KFACS is a multicentre longitudinal study with the baseline survey conducted from May 2016 to November 2017. Each centre recruited participants using quota sampling stratified by age and sex. The num

SJR Q1Age and AgeingOA

BACKGROUND: in October 2018, the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2) updated their original definition of sarcopenia to reflect the scientific and clinical evidence that has accumulated over the last decade. OBJECTIVE: to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia in a large group of community-dwelling older adults using the EWGSOP2 definition and algorithm. DESIGN: a cross-sectional study. SETTING: the nationwide Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study (KFACS). SUBJECTS:

Sarcopenia Is Associated with Cognitive Impairment Mainly Due to Slow Gait Speed: Results from the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study (KFACS)

SJR Q2International Journal of Environmental Research and Public HealthOA

Sarcopenia and cognitive impairment may share common risk factors and pathophysiological pathways. We examined the association between impairments in specific cognitive domains and sarcopenia (and its defining components) in community-dwelling older adults. We analyzed 1887 patients who underwent cognitive function tests and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry from the baseline data of adults aged 70-84 years obtained from the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study. Those with disability in activiti

Assessment of existing anthropometric indices for screening sarcopenic obesity in older adults

SJR Q2British Journal Of NutritionOA

Abstract Sarcopenic obesity is defined as the presence of high fat mass and low muscle mass combined with low physical function, and it is closely related with the onset of cardiovasular diseases (CVD). The existing anthropometric indices, which are being utilised in clinical practice as predictors of CVD, may also be used to screen sarcopenic obesity, but their feasibility remained unknown. Using cross-sectional data of 2031 participants aged 70–84 years (mean age, 75·9 ± 3·9 years; 49·2 % wome

SJR Q2Geriatrics and gerontology international/Geriatrics & gerontology international

AIM: The present study compared the performance of the Jamar and Smedley dynamometers for the measurement of grip strength, and the two dynamometers were used to determine the prevalence rate of weakness in a large, community-dwelling, older adult population, based on different diagnostic criteria. METHODS: A total of 467 community-dwelling older adults aged 69-89 years were recruited into the study. Grip strength was measured with two dynamometers; the Jamar hydraulic hand dynamometer was used

Prevalence of Physical Frailty and Its Multidimensional Risk Factors in Korean Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Findings from Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study
Heeeun Jung, Miji Kim, Yunhwan Lee, Chang Won Won
SJR Q2International Journal of Environmental Research and Public HealthOA

Frailty is defined as a state of increased vulnerability to stressors, and it predicts disability and mortality in the older population. This study aimed to investigate the standardized prevalence and multidimensional risk factors associated with frailty among Korean community-dwelling older adults. We analyzed the baseline data of 2907 adults aged 70–84 years (mean age 75.8 ± 3.9 years, 57.8% women) in the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study. The Fried frailty phenotype was used to define fra

INTRODUCTION: Muscle weakness is linked to a range of adverse health outcomes across the lifespan including mortality, morbidity, and disability. Because lifestyles and body composition are quite different between Western and Asian countries, there is an urgent need to establish normative grip strength values for individuals of Asian descent. This study presents normative data for hand grip strength in a Korean population-representative sample. METHODS: A sample of 11,073 individuals (age 10-80

Association between Objectively Measured Sleep Quality and Obesity in Community-dwelling Adults Aged 80 Years or Older: A Cross-sectional Study
Miji Kim
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

The purpose of this study was to examine the association between objective measures of sleep quality and obesity in older community-dwelling people. This cross-sectional study included 189 community-dwelling adults aged ≥ 80 yr (83.4 ± 2.5 yr [age range, 80-95 yr]). Participants wore an accelerometer (ActiGraph GT3X+) on their non-dominant wrist 24 hr per day for 7 consecutive nights. Sleep parameters measured included total sleep time, sleep efficiency, and wake after sleep onset (WASO) during

Summary Over‐nutrition and its late consequences are a dominant theme in medicine today. In addition to the health hazards brought on by over‐nutrition, the medical community has recently accumulated a roster of health benefits with obesity, grouped under “obesity paradox.” Throughout the world and throughout history until the 20 th century, under‐nutrition was a dominant evolutionary force. Under‐nutrition brings with it a mix of benefits and detriments that are opposite to and continuous with
