BACKGROUND: Interdialytic weight gain (IDWG) has been regarded as a surrogate of volume overload, but also as a marker of a better nutritional status in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on hemodialysis (HD). This paradoxical meaning of IDWG requires further investigation, particularly in adverse cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: A prospective cohort of 1,013 incident HD patients from 36 HD centers of the Clinical Research Center for ESRD in Korea was included. Patients were categorized in

Background and objectives Residual kidney function can be assessed by simply measuring urine volume, calculating GFR using 24-hour urine collection, or estimating GFR using the proposed equation (eGFR). We aimed to investigate the relative prognostic value of these residual kidney function parameters in patients on dialysis. Design, setting, participants, & measurements Using the database from a nationwide prospective cohort study, we compared differential implications of the residual kidney

Experimental and Therapeutic MedicineOA

The therapeutic effects of mulberry (<i>Morus alba</i>) leaves on lipid metabolism, including lipogenesis, lipolysis and hyperlipidemia are widely known, although their fermented products are yet to be applied. To investigate the therapeutic effects of a novel extract of mulberry leaves fermented with <i>Cordyceps militaris</i> (EMfC) on lipid metabolism, the lipid profile of serum, lipid accumulation, lipolytic activity and lipogenesis regulation were measured in high fat diet (HFD)-induced obe

Both the highest and the lowest AIP groups were independently associated with all-cause mortality, showing a U-shaped association. It suggested further studies are needed to identify targets and subgroups that can benefit from intervention of the AIP in incident dialysis patients.

The presence and progression of AoAC assessed by chest X-ray were independently associated with unfavorable outcomes in incident PD patients. Regular follow-up by chest X-ray could be a simple and useful method to stratify mortality risk in these patients.

Although numerous studies have tried to elucidate the best dialysis modality in end-stage renal disease patients with diabetes, results were inconsistent and varied with the baseline characteristics of patients. Furthermore, none of the previous studies on diabetic dialysis patients accounted for the impact of glycemic control. We explored whether glycemic control had modifying effect on mortality between hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) in incident dialysis patients with diabetes.

Endothelial dysfunction is implicated in increased cardiovascular risk in nondialyzed population. However, the prognostic impact of endothelial dysfunction on cardiovascular outcome has not been investigated in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. We prospectively determined endothelial function by brachial artery endothelium-dependent vasodilation (flow-mediated dilation [FMD]) in 143 nondiabetic PD patients and 32 controls. Primary outcome was a major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular event (M

BACKGROUND: Urine osmolality indicates the ability of the kidney to concentrate the urine and reflects the antidiuretic action of vasopressin. However, results about the association between urine osmolality and adverse renal outcomes in chronic kidney disease (CKD) are conflicting. We investigated the association between urine osmolality and adverse renal outcomes in a nationwide prospective CKD cohort. METHODS: A total of 1,999 CKD patients were categorized into 3 groups according to their urin

Visceral fat has been known to associate with atherosclerosis, inflammation, and insulin resistance. However, the influence of visceral fat on cardiovascular disease (CVD) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients has never been elucidated. We investigated whether visceral fat thickness (VFT) has a predictive role in carotid atherosclerosis determined by carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) in PD patients. A cross-sectional study was undertaken in 88 prevalent PD patients. BMI and waist circumferenc

Predictive value of serum albumin-to-globulin ratio for incident chronic kidney disease: A 12-year community-based prospective study

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

This study demonstrates that low serum AG ratio is an independent predictor for CKD development and exhibits a stronger predictive value than other inflammatory markers. These findings suggest that determining serum AG ratio may be more valuable for predicting adverse kidney outcomes in non-CKD populations.

Mulberry leaves have antioxidant activity and anti‑inflammatory effects in several types of cells. However, the efficacy of mulberry leaves fermented with Cordyceps militaris remains unknown. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate whether the ethanol extracts of mulberry leaves fermented with C. militaris (EMfC) can prevent lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‑induced inflammation and autophagy in macrophages. To achieve this, RAW264.7 cells pretreated with three different dose of EMfCs were subs
