BACKGROUND: Recent studies using stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have reported high tumor response and local control. However, the optimal SBRT dose remains unknown, and it is still not clear whether a dose response relationship for local control (LC) and overall survival (OS) exist or not. We performed this study to determine whether a dose response relationship for LC and OS is observed in SBRT for inoperable HCC. METHODS: Between 2003 and 2011, 108 pat

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the toxicity and efficacy of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for the treatment of localized hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the absence of another standard treatment option. METHODS: The authors reviewed the details of 38 patients with inoperable HCC (diameter <10 cm) treated by SBRT in a prospectively registered database at their institution. All patients had been treated by transcatheter arterial chemoembolization before SBRT, which had been final

BACKGROUND: Although several prospective studies have reported the efficacy of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), treatment-related toxicity varies and has not been determined. Therefore, the authors evaluated the safety and efficacy of SBRT for patients with HCC in a hepatitis B virus-endemic area. METHODS: This multicenter phase 2 trial enrolled patients with unresectable HCC. Patients received SBRT with 45 to 60 Gy in 3 fractions. To evaluate gastroduode

Emodin, an inhibitor of protein tyrosine kinase, possesses antiviral, immunosuppressive, anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects. In the present study, we investigated the effect of emodin on the hyaluronic acid (HA)-induced invasion of human glioma cells. Emodin significantly inhibited the HA-induced invasion through a Matrigel coated chamber, secretion of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, and HA-induced secretion of MMP-9 in glioma cells. To investigate the possible mechanisms involved in the

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this presentation is to show 3-dimensional development of the ventricles of the brain in early pregnancy, from 6 to 13 weeks, and to provide a reference for early diagnosis of central nervous system anomalies such as hydrocephalus and holoprosencephaly. METHODS: From March 2007 to August 2007, 46 patients were included. All patients had routine first-trimester 2- and 3-dimensional sonographic examinations at the same time. All cases were examined with a Voluson 730 Expe

The aim of this study was to investigate whether stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) can salvage gastric cancer patients with para-aortic lymph node (PALN) recurrence. From January 2003 to December 2006, 7 patients were treated for isolated PALN recurrence from gastric cancer after curative resection. Follow up durations ranged from 19 to 33 months (median; 26 months), and SBRT doses from 45 Gy to 51 Gy (median 48 Gy) in 3 fractions. Disease progression-free and overall survivals and toxicitie

Complex nanoparticles (NPs) of poly(2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylene vinylene) (MEH-PPV) NP adsorbed with Au NPs (MEH-PPV/Au NPs) were fabricated through a reprecipitation method. The formation of MEH-PPV/Au NP complexes was confirmed through high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared experiments. The laser confocal microscope photoluminescence (PL) efficiency of the complex MEH-PPV/Au single NP dramatically increased compared with that of the MEH-P

Metformin Radiosensitizes p53-Deficient Colorectal Cancer Cells through Induction of G2/M Arrest and Inhibition of DNA Repair Proteins

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

The present study addressed whether the combination of metformin and ionizing radiation (IR) would show enhanced antitumor effects in radioresistant p53-deficient colorectal cancer cells, focusing on repair pathways for IR-induced DNA damage. Metformin caused a higher reduction in clonogenic survival as well as greater radiosensitization and inhibition of tumor growth of p53-/- than of p53+/+ colorectal cancer cells and xenografts. Metformin combined with IR induced accumulation of tumor cells i

Both antigen optimization and lysosomal targeting are required for enhanced anti‐tumour protective immunity in a human papillomavirus E7‐expressing animal tumour model
Mi Suk Kim, Jeong‐Im Sin
SJR Q1ImmunologyOA

DNA immunization is a new approach for cancer immune therapy. In this study, we constructed human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 E7 expression vector cassettes and then compared the abilities of these constructs to induce antitumour protection. Lysosome-targeted E7 antigens, and to a lesser degree signal sequence-conjugated and transmembrane region sequence-conjugated E7 antigens in a DNA form, displayed tumour protection significantly higher than wild-type E7 antigens. This enhanced tumour protection

High-mobility group box 2 (HMGB2) modulates radioresponse and is downregulated by p53 in colorectal cancer cell

SJR Q1Cancer Biology & TherapyOA

Overexpression of high-mobility group box 2 (HMGB2) is recently reported in several malignant cancers and was correlated with poor response to preoperative chemoradiotherapy of colorectal cancer patients. To enhance the chemoradiotherapy efficacy, the biological function of HMGB2 was investigated with respect to radiation response. HMGB2 gene knockdown cells were constructed by infecting shRNA expressing lentivirus and clonogenic assay was performed to count the radiosensitivity. HMGB2 knockdown

Role of HIF-1α in response of tumors to a combination of hyperthermia and radiation in vivo

SJR Q1International Journal of HyperthermiaOA

PURPOSE: Mild temperature hyperthermia (MTH) increases blood flow and oxygenation in tumours. On the other hand, high-dose-per-fraction irradiation damages blood vessels, decreases blood flow and increases hypoxia in tumours. The radiation-induced hypoxia in tumours activates hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and its target genes, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), promoting revascularization and recurrence. In the present study, we examined the hypothesis that MTH inhibits ra
