15Even though a computer-aided design (CAD)-based geometry can be directly implemented in Geant4 as polygon-mesh using the G4TessellatedSolid class, the computation speed becomes very slow, especially when the geometry is composed of a large number of facets. To address this problem, in the present study, a new Geant4 solid class, named DagSolid, was developed based on the direct accelerated geometry for the Monte Carlo (DAGMC) library which provides the ray-tracing acceleration algorithm function
Recently, Task Group 103 of the International Commission on Radiological Protection completed the development of new adult male and female mesh-type reference computational phantoms, which are planned for use in future International Commission on Radiological Protection dose coefficient calculations. In the present study, the performance of major Monte Carlo particle transport codes, i.e., Geant4, MCNP6, and PHITS, were investigated for the mesh-type reference computational phantoms by performin
The purpose of this work is to study the influence of the pore space structure on resistivity index curves of sandstones and carbonates. We present a new method for measuring the resistivity index (RI) curve in air-brine system in drainage and imbibition. On sandstones, the results indicate a saturation exponent close to 2 in the brine saturation range Sw>20%. Below this saturation, a bending down deviation is sometimes observed. On carbonates (about 10 different structures), for single porosity
This paper reports an extensive assessment of widely used evaluated atomic data libraries released in ENDF/B-VIII.0 and in EPICS2017 in early 2018. The new versions are intended to replace the data libraries currently used by major Monte Carlo particle transport codes to model electron and photon interactions with matter, which date back to the 1990s. The evaluation is performed from a user perspective and concerns various characteristics of the data, including their intrinsic consistency, the d
In this study, the multi-threading performance of the Geant4, MCNP6, and PHITS codes was evaluated as a function of the number of threads (N) and the complexity of the tetrahedral-mesh phantom. For this, three tetrahedral-mesh phantoms of varying complexity (simple, moderately complex, and highly complex) were prepared and implemented in the three different Monte Carlo codes, in photon and neutron transport simulations. Subsequently, for each case, the initialization time, calculation time, and
PURPOSE: This report offers a detailed examination of the inception and current state of the Heavy-ion Therapy Center (HITC) at the Yonsei Cancer Center (YCC), setting it apart as the world's first center equipped with a fixed beam and two superconducting gantries for carbon-ion radiation therapy (CIRT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preparations for CIRT at YCC began in 2013; accordingly, this center has completed a decade of meticulous planning and culminating since the operational commencement of th
In the present study, to achieve accurate 4D Monte Carlo dose calculation in radiation therapy, we devised a new approach that combines (1) modeling of the patient body using tetrahedral-mesh geometry based on the patient's 4D CT data, (2) continuous movement/deformation of the tetrahedral patient model by interpolation of deformation vector fields acquired through deformable image registration, and (3) direct transportation of radiation particles during the movement and deformation of the tetra
Background Tetrahedral-mesh geometries can be used in the MCNP code, but the MCNP code accepts only the geometry in the Abaqus input file format; hence, the existing tetrahedral-mesh models first need to be converted to the Abacus input file format to be used in the MCNP code. In the present study, we developed a simple but useful computer program, TET2MCNP, for converting TetGen-generated tetrahedral-mesh models to the Abacus input file format. Materials and Methods TET2MCNP is written in C++ a
We propose a new type of computational phantom, the “4D voxel phantom,” for realistic modeling of continuous respiratory motion in Monte Carlo dose calculation. In this phantom, continuous respiratory motion is realized by linear interpolation of the deformation vector fields (DVFs) between the neighboring original phases in the 4D CT data of a patient and by subsequent application of the DVFs to the phase images or to the reference image to produce multiple inter-phase images between the neighb
Purpose: Various deformable image registration (DIR) methods have been used to evaluate organ deformations in 4-dimensional computed tomography (4D CT) images scanned during the respiratory motions of a patient. This study assesses the performance of 10 DIR algorithms using 4D CT images of 5 patients with fiducial markers (FMs) implanted during the postoperative radiosurgery of multiple lung metastases. Methods: To evaluate DIR algorithms, 4D CT images of 5 patients were used, and ground-truths
The objective of this study is to compare the plan robustness at various beam angles. Hence, the influence of the beam angles on robustness and linear energy transfer (LET) was evaluated in gantry-based carbon-ion radiation therapy (CIRT) for prostate cancer. 10 patients with prostate cancer were considered, and a total dose of 51.6 Gy (Relative biological effectiveness (RBE) was prescribed for the target volume in 12 fractions. Five beam field plans comprising two opposed fields with different
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the matching error that occurs when the Mobius3D fingerprinting system is applied in conjunction with an Elekta linear accelerator (LINAC) and to offer an acceptable and alternative method for circumventing this problem. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To avoid the multileaf collimator (MLC) conflicting error in the Mobius3D fingerprinting system, we developed an in-house program to move the MLC in the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DI
PURPOSE: Tetrahedral mesh (TM)-based computational human phantoms have recently been developed for evaluation of exposure dose with the merit of precisely representing human anatomy and the changing posture freely. However, conversion of recently developed TM phantoms to the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) file format, which can be utilized in the clinic, has not been attempted. The aim of this study was to develop a technique, called TET2DICOM, to convert the TM phantoms
BACKGROUND: Based on a previous study on the feasibility of TomoEQA, an exit detector-based patient-specific pre-treatment quality assurance (QA) method for helical tomotherapy, an in-depth clinical evaluation was conducted. METHODS: Data of one hundred patients were analyzed to evaluate the clinical usefulness of TomoEQA for patient-specific pre-treatment QA in comparison with the conventional phantom-based method. Additional investigations were also performed under unusual measurement conditio
