15OBJECTIVES: The current trend in managing laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer is to perform organ preservation therapy, which improves quality of life and decreases treatment-related morbidity. Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) can overcome the limit of "line of sight" often met in classic transoral procedure. We utilized a robotic surgical system to evaluate the feasibility and oncologic safety of transoral partial pharyngectomy and laryngectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: TORS was performed by usin
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The objective of this prospective study was to confirm the validity of transoral robotic supraglottic partial laryngectomy as a conservation surgery for treating supraglottic cancer. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective case study. METHODS: Between December 2009 and November 2011, 16 patients were enrolled in this study. Acoustic waveform analysis was conducted and Voice Handicap Index 10 was measured to assess voice status. Videopharyngogram study and the functional outcome swallowi
OBJECTIVES: We performed robot-assisted selective neck dissection via a modified facelift or retroauricular approach without creating an apparent scar around the neck to remove neck node of levels II to V after transoral robotic surgery of a primary lesion in patients with laryngopharyngeal carcinoma. Patient data were prospectively analyzed to verify the feasibility and efficacy of robot-assisted neck dissection in the treatment of cN0 laryngopharyngeal carcinoma. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective case
Diallyl disulfide (DADS), a major organosulfur compound of garlic oil, is known to have an anticancer effect on human cancer cells. However, the exact mechanisms of this anticancer activity remain unclear. Here, we investigate the effects of DADS on cell cycle progression in human colon cancer HCT-116 cells by exploring the role played by regulatory molecules such as p53 and cyclin B1. Treatment of HCT-116 cells by DADS induced a marked growth inhibition with a slight reduction in viability and
In treating patients with HNSCC, DSF may contribute to improved HNSCC patient's survival. The characteristic anti-cancer effects of DSF on HNSCC may suggest new therapeutic potential for this medication in HNSCC patients.
PPS surgery via a transoral approach using a robotic surgical system is technically feasible and secures a better cosmetic outcome than the transcervical, transparotid, or transmandibular approach. This new surgical method is safe and effective for benign diseases of the PPS.
In the TORS and radical surgery groups, the 3-year overall survival rate was 85% and 78%, respectively, and disease-free survival was 81% and 76%, respectively. Significant differences were not observed in the overall survival and disease-free survival rates. As regards postoperative functional recovery, the TORS group showed statistically better results for decannulation, swallowing, and hospitalization compared with the radical surgery group. On the University of Washington (UW)-QOL, the TORS
This study analyzed the prognostic significance of clinico-pathologic factors, including the number of metastatic lymph nodes (LNs) and lymph node ratio (LNR), in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), and attempted to construct a disease recurrence prediction model using machine learning techniques. We retrospectively analyzed clinico-pathologic data from 1040 patients diagnosed with PTC between 2003 and 2009. We analyzed clinico-pathologic factors related to recurrence through logist
OBJECTIVE: We analyzed the changes in voice- and swallowing-related symptoms that occurred over time in patients who underwent thyroidectomy and identified any associated risk factors. METHODS: One hundred and three patients who underwent thyroidectomy were enrolled. RESULTS: The mean thyroidectomy voice-related questionnaire (TVQ) score before surgery was 12.41 ± 12.19; it significantly increased to 28.24 ± 18.01 ( P < .001) 1 month postoperatively, decreased to 24.02 ± 17.30 ( P = .014) and 20
