15Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are receiving increasing attention for power-grid energy storage systems. Nevertheless, warranting long-term reversible operation is not trivial owing to uncontrolled interfacial phenomena related to zinc dendritic growth and parasitic reactions. Herein, the addition of hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPA) to the electrolyte revealed the surface overpotential (|η s |) to be a key metric of the reversibility. HMPA adsorbs onto active sites on the zinc metal surface, r
Abstract Despite substantial progresses, in aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs), developing zinc metal anodes with long‐term reliable cycling capabilities is nontrivial because of dendritic growth and related parasitic reactions on the zinc surface. Here, we exploit the tip‐blocking effect of a scandium (Sc 3+ ) additive in the electrolyte to induce uniform zinc deposition. Additional to the tri‐valency of Sc 3+ , the rigidity of its hydration shell effectively prevents zinc ions from concentrati
This study introduces a cutting-edge electrolyte formulation that mitigates Li metal corrosion, significantly extending the calendar life of LMBs. Based on the SEI swelling model, hydrocarbons kinetically block the highly corrosive F-diluent entry.
Background Severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) should be intervened before the development of irreversible right ventricular (RV) dysfunction. However, current guidelines do not provide criterion related to RV systolic function to guide optimal surgical timing. We investigated the prognostic value of RV longitudinal strain in patients undergoing isolated surgery for severe functional TR. Methods and Results We enrolled 115 consecutive patients (aged 62±10 years; 23.5% men; 62.6% [n=72] with prev
We investigated sex-related differences in the prognosis of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) using the Korea National Health Insurance Service database. From 2010 to 2016, 9524 patients diagnosed with HCM and had more than 1-year follow-up period were analyzed. The primary endpoint was the composite of cardiovascular death or new-onset heart failure (HF) admission. Propensity score-matching analysis was performed to adjust for different baseline characteristics. With a 4.4-years'
We report the electron holography images of spin configurations in peculiar assemblies of soft magnetic nanoparticles in single-, double-, triple-, or quadruple-sphere geometrical arrangements, in which each particle has a three-dimensional (3D) magnetic-vortex structure. Micromagnetic numerical calculations reveal that the uniqueness of the nanoparticles' 3D vortex structure plays a crucial role in their assembly, especially in terms of the contrasting contributions of the exchange and dipolar
Individuals with intermediate to high cardiac risk for major noncardiac surgery suffer from perioperative myocardial ischemic injury. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term impact of postoperative cardiac troponin elevation on clinical outcome after major noncardiac surgery.Patients (n = 750) aged ≥ 50 years who underwent major noncardiac surgery were eligible for the study. Postoperative cardiac troponin-I data were collected retrospectively and consecutively. The primary outco
Abstract Aims Increased red cell distribution width (RDW) is a poor prognostic factor in patients with heart failure (HF). However, only a few large-scale studies have identified the clinical utility of RDW after adjusting for covariates affecting RDW. Methods and results From January 2010 to April 2021, we retrospectively enrolled patients diagnosed with HF from three referral hospitals with available RDW data (taken within 3 months of HF diagnosis) using an integrated clinical data system. Background The association between arterial stiffness and left ventricular (LV) diastolic function has been demonstrated in several studies, but the samples size in those studies was small. This study aims to verify this issue in a large number of study subjects. Methods A total of 7,013 consecutive participants (mean age 60.6 years and 43.3% female) who underwent both baPWV and transthoracic echocardiography were retrospectively analyzed. Subjects with significant cardiac structural abnormaliti
Patients with severe COVID-19 had lower LVEF and LVGLS. RVGLS was not different between patients with severe and nonsevere COVID-19.
The differential diagnosis of cardiac mass is important in determining the therapeutic plan and avoiding unnecessary surgical intervention. Non-invasive imaging methods would be useful in the diagnosis of suspected cardiac mass, because they may provide earlier diagnosis and more accurate assessment of cardiac mass. Native aortic valve thrombosis is a rare disorder and difficult to differentiate from a tumor, and in particular, a papillary fibroelastoma. Thus, the clinical decision making with i
Background: The mechanism and medical treatment target for degenerative aortic valve disease, including aortic stenosis, is not well studied. In this study, we investigated the effect of clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) on the development of aortic valve sclerosis (AVS), a calcified aortic valve without significant stenosis. Methods: Participants with AVS (valves ≥2 mm thick, high echogenicity, and a peak transaortic velocity of <2.5 m/sec) and an age- and sex-matched contr
Abstract Aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs) offer compelling advantages owing to their inherent safety, cost‐effectiveness, and the exceptional electrochemical properties of the Zn metal anode. However, achieving highly reversible Zn (de)plating remains a formidable challenge. In this study, a molecularly engineered hybrid electrolyte is systematically investigated to modulate the Zn 2+ solvation environment and enhance the interfacial stability.
