15Abstract Within the breath lie numerous health indicators, encompassing respiratory patterns and biomarkers extending beyond respiratory conditions to cardiovascular health. Recently, the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has not only underscored the necessity of on-the-spot breath analysis but has also normalized the use of masks in everyday life. Simultaneously, the rapid evolution of wearable technology has given rise to innovative healthcare monitoring tools, with a specific emphasis on w
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of the Steri-Strips patch (3M) on the treatment of large traumatic tympanic membrane perforations (TMP). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, controlled. SETTING: Tertiary university hospital. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A randomized prospective analysis was performed between February 2009 and January 2011 for the treatment of traumatic TMP larger than 50% of the entire tympanic membrane. The results of closure rate, closure time, hearing gain, and rate of otorr
BACKGROUND: The performance of nationwide studies of chronic otitis media (COM) in adults has been insufficient in Korea. We evaluated the prevalence and risk factors of COM in Korea. METHODS: This study was conducted using data from the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (n = 23,621). After excluding the subjects under 20 year old and suffered from cancers, 16,063 patients were evaluated for COM. Participants underwent a medical interview, physical examination, endosc
OBJECTIVE: The authors compared the efficacy of simultaneous and subsequent intratympanic dexamethasone injections for the treatment of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective randomized controlled multicenter study. SETTING: Three tertiary university hospitals. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In the simultaneous intratympanic dexamethasone group, intratympanic dexamethasone was given initially with systemic steroids. In the subsequent intratympanic dexamethasone group, int
Coffee is the one of the most common beverages worldwide and has received considerable attention for its beneficial health effects. However, the association of coffee with hearing and tinnitus has not been well studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of coffee with hearing and tinnitus based on a national population-based survey. We evaluated hearing and tinnitus data from the 2009⁻2012 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and their relationship with
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the epidemiologic and microbiological characteristics of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) and hospital-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (HA-MRSA) infections in the otorrhea of chronic suppurative otitis media (COM) patients. DESIGN: Retrospective study of patients with newly identified MRSA infections from January 1998 through December 2006. A total of 2773 patients with a diagnosis of COM were included in thi
BACKGROUND: Otitis media (OM) is a major reason for children's visits to physicians and a major cause of their being treated with antibiotics. It not only causes economic burdens but also influences hearing, speech, and education. To our knowledge, no nationwide population-based study has assessed the association between air pollution and OM. Therefore, this study evaluated the association between air pollution levels and the incidence of OM. METHODS: We identified cases of OM that occurred in S
Traffic-derived materials and tobacco smoke are major air pollutants that aggravate upper airway disease. Novel mechanisms of action have been suggested and risk factors have been defined. However, the data are conflicting, and controlled prospective studies are required.
Abstract Particulate matter (PM) is the main component of air pollution. Children are vulnerable to PM and acute otitis media (AOM), which is one of the most common diseases in children. However, studies on the relationship between AOM in children and PM are rare and their results are inconsistent. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of PM on AOM in children on the basis of the Korea National Health Insurance service (NHIS) claims data. NHIS claim data from 2008 to 2015 was used t
