본 논문은 창작 실제와 분석 영역에서 음악 작품의 통일성과 응집력을 보장하는 수단으로여겨지는 모티브에 대한 이해와 특히 분석에서 작품의 응집력을 판단하는 잣대로 사용되는모티브의 실체에 대해 비판적 고찰을 시도하였다. 모티브에 대한 쉔커의 입장 변화를 역사적으로 검토하는 것으로 시작해 그의 초기 견해와 후기 견해를 쇤베르크와 비판적으로 고찰하였다. 이 과정에서 쉔커의 모티브에 대한 독특한 개념을 버크하르트, 콘, 캐드왤래더와 패스틸, 그리고 모레노의 구조적 유사성과 자유 유사성의 개념에 기대어 설명하였다. 또한 쇤베르크의 모티브를 모레노가 말하는 지시적 모티브와 비교함으로써 모티브 분석의 가능성을넓히고자 하였다. 쉔커식 이론의 모티브와 쇤베르크의 모티브분석 실제에서 종합되어 다양한 분석 결과물들을 도출할 수 있는 가능성에 대해 탐구하면서 모차르트 피아노협주곡 K. 488, 제2악장과 베토벤 피아노소나타 Op. 2/1의 제1악장에 나타나는 모티브적 포화에 대해논의하였다. 논문투고일자

음악활동의 세 주체인 작곡가와 연주자 그리고 청중은 매개체인 음악을 통해 서로간의 의사소통을 한다. 작곡가는 악보를 통해 자신이 작곡한 음악이 어떻게 연주되어야 하는지에 대한 정보를 기입하게 되며, 연주자는 이 정보를 바탕으로 한 연주행위를 통해 음악을 청중에게 전달하게 된다. 이러한 연주과정에서 연주자는 악보에 표기된 음고, 박자, 리듬, 셈여림의 기본적 연주 정보와 음악표현에 관한 지시어 등을 자신의 연주에 반영한다. 그러나 이들은 여기에 머무르지 않고 보다 깊은 “해석”의 영역으로 진입하길 원하면서 작곡가에 의해 표면적으로 기재되지는 않았지만 음악이 내재적으로 포함하고 있는 그 무엇인가를 표현하기를 원하며 자신만의 “음악 만들기”를 시도한다. 이 때 해석의 전초적(前哨的) 단계로서 해석을 보다 객관적인 근거에서 출발할 수 있게 해주는 것이 분석이다.

본 논문은 “음악 형식은 표면적인 현상에 불과하고, 궁극적으로 후경층 즉, 근본구조에서유래한다”는 음악 형식에 대한 쉔커(Heinrich Schenker, 1868-1935)의 급진적이고 독특한 생각에 내재한 전통적 형식 이론과의 절충적인 가능성을 살펴보고, 후대의 쉔커 이론가들이 제시한 노래 형식의 분석 모델을 검토하여 이를 증보하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 필자는쉔커의 『자유작법』 마지막 장에 나타난 음악 형식에 관한 다소 모호한 견해들을 명료화 하는 것에서 시작하여 캐드왤래더와 슈맬팰트, 뉴마이어/테핑, 찰스 스미스 등의 포스트 쉔케리안들의 쉔커의 형식 이론에 대한 관점들을 비판적으로 검토하며 이를 재구성한다. 또한 2 부분·3부분으로 불리는 쉔커의 ‘노래 형식’에 있어 전통적 형식 이론과 쉔커식 견해를 절충하려는 시도들을 살펴보며 제1중경층 형식 모델에 입각한 분석적 접근 방법의 교수법적 명료함과 유용성에 대해 주장한다.
