15Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is thought to be caused by oxidative stress. Oxidative stress at the cellular level results from many factors, including expo- sure to alcohol, medications, cold, toxins or radia- tion. In this study we have investigated the gene transcriptional profiles on the human myocardial tissues from AF and oxidative stress. Right atrial appendages were obtained from AF patients (n = 26) undergoing the Maze procedure and from control patients (n = 26) who were in normal sinus rhyt
Glutathione S-transferase (GST) plays a key role in the detoxification of xenobiotic atherogen generated by smoking. To analyze the effect of GSTM1/T1 gene polymorphisms on the development of smoking-related coronary artery disease (CAD), 775 Korean patients who underwent coronary angiography were enrolled. The subjects were classified by luminal diameter stenosis into group A (>50%), B (20-50%), or C (<20%). GSTM1 and GSTT1 gene polymorphisms were analyzed using multiplex polymerase chain react
In this study, we investigated the efects of PAHs and dioxin on mRNA and plasma protein expresion using genomic and proteomic ana-lysis for automobile emision inspectors and waste incineration workers. About 54 workers from automobile emission inspection ofices, 31 workers from waste incinerating company and 84 unexposed healthy subjects were enroled in this study. Urine and air samples were colected says were caried out to evaluate any DNA damage in mononuclear and polynuclear cels. A significa
PURPOSE. The objective of this study was to conduct an in vitro comparative evaluation of polished and laserdimpled titanium (Ti) surfaces to determine whether either surface has an advantage in promoting the attachment of epithelial-like cells and fibroblast to Ti. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Forty-eight coin-shaped samples of commercially pure, grade 4 Ti plates were used in this study. These discs were cleaned to a surface roughness (Ra: roughness centerline average) of 180 nm by polishing and wer

Asthma is a complex inflammatory disease and its prevalence has increased worldwide, especially in young children. In this study, we used a ‘24- hour recall method’ to identify differences between children with and without asthma in energy intake and energy-adjusted nutrition intake. We also performed reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RTPCR) with pathway-targeted arrays (RT2 ProfilerTM PCR Array) to investigate the expression profiles of chemokines and cytokines in children with a
Background:Atrial fibrillation (AF) has a tendency to become persistent over time and is known to induce atrialelectrical, mechanical and ionic remodeling. However, the underlying mechanisms by which AF persists were notfully determined. The present study was carried out to assess alterations in the gene expression, including the oxidativestress-related genes of atrial myocardial cells in patients with persistent AF, and ultrastructural remodeling,as assessed by electron microscopy (EM) in pacin
Methylation events play a critical role in various cellular processes including regulation of gene transcription and proliferation. We observed that methyltransferase activity underwent time-dependent changes in the cytosol of the rat hepatocytes upon partial hepatectomy. However, any change in the methylation of nuclear proteins is not clear during hepatocyte proliferation. The nuclear fraction possesses basal level of methyltransferase to catalyze methylation of several proteins ranging from 7
Statement of problem. In the process of bone formation, titanium (Ti) surface roughness is an important factor modulating osteoblastic function. Purpose. This study was carried out to determine the effect of different Ti surface on biologic responses of a human osteoblast-like cell line (MG63). Materials and methods. MG63 cells were cultured on S (smooth), SLA (sandblasted largegrit & acid etching), HA (hydroxyapatite) Ti. The morphology and attachment of the cells were examined by SEM. The cDNA
The increasing prevalence and severity of environmental diseases have been attributed the rise in environmental pollutants occurring as a consequence of industrial development. In this study, we examined that underlying mechanisms of toluene in human lung epithelial cells. We selected two genes known to be involved in environmental disease such as RANTES and eotaxin for the present study based on published reports and prior observation. We observed that toluene increased the mRNA and protein lev
Background: Long term outcomes are imperative to confirm safety of drug-eluting stents. There have been two randomized controlled trials comparing everolimus-eluting stents (EES) and Resolute zotarolimus-eluting stents (ZES-R). To date, long-term clinical outcomes of these stents were limited to only one report which has recently reported 4-year comparisons of these stents. Therefore, more evidences are needed regarding long-term clinical outcomes of the second generation stents. This study comp
Despite widespread use of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) NPs in industry and in our daily lives, no studies so far have evaluated the potential of their skin phototoxicity and sensitization. This study was designed to investigate the potential of phototoxicity and sensitization of SiO₂NPs. Assessment of the potential of skin phototoxicity was carried out using the 3T3neutral red uptake test, an HSEM, and an animal model. The potential of skin sensitization was evaluated by a non-radioisotope local lymph
