Maintaining Optimal Surgical Conditions With Low Insufflation Pressures is Possible With Deep Neuromuscular Blockade During Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery

SJR Q3MedicineOA

Carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption and increased intra-abdominal pressure can adversely affect perioperative physiology and postoperative recovery. Deep muscle relaxation is known to improve the surgical conditions during laparoscopic surgery. We aimed to compare the effects of deep and moderate neuromuscular block in laparoscopic colorectal surgery, including intra-abdominal pressure. In this prospective, double-blind, parallel-group trial, 72 adult patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal surg

SJR Q1AnaesthesiaOA

This study aimed to assess the association between caudal block and postoperative complications after tubularised incised plate urethroplasty. The medical records of 388 paediatric patients who underwent urethroplasty at a tertiary medical centre were analysed retrospectively. Among the 342 patients included, 216 patients received a caudal block and 72 (21.1%) patients suffered surgical complications. The number of patients having surgical complications was significantly greater among patients w

Intravenously Administered Lidocaine and Magnesium During Thyroid Surgery in Female Patients for Better Quality of Recovery After Anesthesia

SJR Q1Anesthesia & AnalgesiaOA

BACKGROUND: Although systemic lidocaine and magnesium have been widely studied as perioperative analgesic adjuvants, they have been rarely evaluated with respect to recovery quality under the same conditions. We compared the quality of recovery 40 (QoR-40) scores of female patients who received intravenous lidocaine, magnesium, and saline during thyroidectomy to investigate their effects on comprehensive recovery from anesthesia. METHODS: In this prospective, double-blind trial, 135 female patie

Translationally regulated C/EBPβ isoform expression upregulates metastatic genes in hormone‐independent prostate cancer cells
Myoung Hwa Kim, Jerrel Field
SJR Q1The Prostate

BACKGROUND: C/EBP beta is a transcription factor regulating key biological processes including cellular growth and differentiation and its increased expression correlates with tumor invasiveness. Recently, the increased expression of C/EBP beta was reported in proliferative inflammatory atrophy of the prostate, associating with increased COX-2 expression and androgen receptor (AR) downregulation. METHODS: C/EBP beta expression was determined in DU-145, PC-3 and LNCaP cells by immunoblotting. Tra

C/EBPβ regulates metastatic gene expression and confers TNF‐α resistance to prostate cancer cells
Myoung Hwa Kim, Alena Z. Minton, Vikas Agrawal
SJR Q1The Prostate

BACKGROUND: CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein beta (C/EBPbeta) is a transcription factor and consists of three isoforms, transcription-activating A/B (C/EBPbeta-AB) and transcription inhibitory C (C/EBPbeta-C). We previously reported that C/EBPbeta-C was predominantly expressed in hormone-dependent LNCaP cells, while C/EBPbeta-AB forms were predominant in hormone-independent prostate cancer (HI-PCa) cells. METHODS: Reporter gene analysis was performed to investigate transcriptional activity of C/EB

Single dose of dexamethasone is not associated with postoperative recurrence and mortality in breast cancer patients: a propensity-matched cohort study

SJR Q2BMC CancerOA

BACKGROUND: Dexamethasone is widely used in cancer patients despite the concern that perioperative glucocorticoids may potentially cause immunosuppression. However, studies on the influence of dexamethasone on cancer recurrence after curative surgery have produced conflicting results. The goal of our study was to compare postoperative recurrence-free survival and overall survival between patients with breast cancer who received perioperative dexamethasone and those who did not. Different mechanisms of soy isoflavones in cell cycle regulation and inhibition of invasion.
Myoung Hwa Kim, Angelica M. Gutierrez‐Barrera, Ronald H. Goldfarb

BACKGROUND: Soy isoflavones, genistein, daidzein and glycitein, are thought to have beneficial effects on cancer prevention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used cell cycle analysis, invasion assay and immunoblotting to determine the effects of genistein and glycitein on Jurkat T cells. RESULTS: Glycitein inhibited Jurkat cell invasion at a level comparable to the inhibition by genistein. Both genistein and glycitein down-regulated MMP-13 proteolytic activity by 60-70% and MMP-8 expression. Caffeine c

BACKGROUND: One of the green tea components epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) significantly prevented the growth of prostate cancer cells. In this study, synergistic effect of EGCG and ibuprofen (EGCG+ibuprofen) was investigated to determine their anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic action in DU-145 prostate cancer cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cell death analysis, immunoblotting, RT-PCR analysis, and caspase activity assay were used. RESULTS: EGCG+ibuprofen treatment resulted in 90% growth inh

The Effect of Intraoperative Fluid Management According to Stroke Volume Variation on Postoperative Bowel Function Recovery in Colorectal Cancer Surgery

SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

Stroke volume variation (SVV) has been used to predict fluid responsiveness; however, it remains unclear whether goal-directed fluid therapy using SVV contributes to bowel function recovery in abdominal surgery. This prospective randomized controlled trial aimed to compare bowel movement recovery in patients undergoing colon resection surgery between groups using traditional or SVV-based methods for intravenous fluid management. We collected data between March 2015 and July 2017. Bowel function

Protein phosphatase 1 activation and alternative splicing of Bcl‐X and Mcl‐1 by EGCG + ibuprofen
Myoung Hwa Kim
SJR Q2Journal of Cellular Biochemistry

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and ibuprofen synergistically act to suppress proliferation and enhance apoptosis of prostate cancer cell lines, PC-3 and LNCaP. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of underlying this synergism. Most interestingly, EGCG + ibuprofen treatment in PC-3 cells resulted in altering the ratio of the splice variants of Bcl-X and Mcl-1, downregulating the mRNA levels of anti-apoptotic Bcl-X(L) and Mcl-1(L) with a concomitant increase in the mRNA le
