15We study a retailer’s sourcing strategy under consumers’ stockpiling behaviour and the factors associated with the selection of an optimal strategy in multi-tier supply chains in the presence of supply disruption risk. Stockpiling behaviour occurs when consumers attempt to mitigate the negative impact of a supply shortage. We prove that those behaviours become stronger if consumers have experienced similar problems before and weaker as more inventories are hoarded. Based on these findings, numer
Transferring and applying manufacturing principles and practices to improve both service efficiency and service quality is an important area of research in service operations. This paper advances this stream of research by examining the compatibility of operating efficiency and service quality. Specifically, our research addresses the following questions: (1) Do operating efficiency and service quality have to be traded off, or can they exist in unison (are they compatible)? and (2) What aspects
ABSTRACT This article focuses on an important and emergent standard for sustainable operations management: the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. Unlike similar certifications, its focus is on the entire upstream supply chain, reflecting the criticality of supply chain management to ensure sustainable products. We investigate the financial impact from FSC certification, offering valuable decision support for managers considering this certification. Taking a contingency perspective,
Over the past two decades, since the emergence of the triple bottom line philosophy, the relationship between environmental sustainability and corporate performance has received a lot of attention, but has generated mixed or often even contradictory results. A few recent studies have inferred that innovations are the missing link that connects the environmental sustainability of a firm to other performance metrics; however, the evidence of such a proposition has been restricted to being conceptu
This study investigates the process of how the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in automobile and consumer electronics industries design their supply networks. In contrast to the sociological viewpoint, which regards the emergence of networks as a social and psychological phenomenon occurring among non-predetermined individuals, this paper attempts to provide a strategic supply network perspective that views the supply network as a strategic choice made by an OEM. Anchored in the multiple
The extant sustainability literature has argued that supply chain (SC) members can gain both financial and operational benefits from a joint sustainability development (JSD) effort. However, no guidance has been provided on how SC members could collaborate on their sustainability development efforts to achieve the intended economic performance. This study addressed this research gap by proposing different contractual governances, based on a game-theoretic approach, for both manufacturer and reta
Supply chain integration (SCI) has been touted as an important strategy for obtaining competitive advantage. In the context of the mobile telecommunication service (MTS) industry, this study examines how different dimensions of SCI relate to customer-oriented performance measures, including customer satisfaction, customer relationships, switching costs, and customer loyalty. Building upon the service profit chain framework, this study proposed and tested seven research hypotheses in two dimensio
This paper attempts to provide quantitative and statistically significant evidence on the multiplex nature of a multi-tier supply network. The unique primary data consisted of component-level supply networks is analyzed to examine the interrelationships among their architectural properties based on various network tie types. All the supply network partners’ bidirectional responses stretching from an OEM to its raw materials suppliers are collected and treated as directed-valued in the analysis
While supply chain competition increasingly occurs at the network level, most research remains limited to dyadic or triadic relationships, failing to capture the full complexity of multi-tier supply networks. This research investigates the influence of four distinct types of network ties—contractual, transactional, professional, and personal—on supply chain performance, evaluated across five dimensions: cost, quality, delivery, flexibility, and innovation. The analysis draws on data gathered fro
This study investigates the evolution of South Korea’s defence industry from a technology importer to a global innovation leader, proposing a dynamic capability-driven innovation model. The model integrates dynamic capability theory with innovation perspectives to explain how systematic capability development supported strategic transformation across five key stages from 1945 to 2024. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combines quantitative analysis of military expenditure, exports, and i
The purpose of the present research is to examine and compare product and logistics competencies in supplier selection decisions, which can serve as a crucial building block for competitive differentiation, in the context of the unique private label (PL) supply chain. This study also hypothesizes about the impact of product and logistics competence on the retailer’s financial performance. Lastly, the moderating role of the product type in the proposed research model is explored. Partial least sq
Purpose: This study proposes a conceptual framework that positions inclusive agricultural supply chains as an operational mechanism for simultaneously advancing SDG 2, SDG 13, and SDG 15 in development cooperation, thereby overcoming the sectoral silos that have long shaped agricultural ODA. Originality: Existing SDG integration research has stressed partnerships and nexus approaches but has paid limited attention to how integration is produced at the intervention level. This study argues that c
