15BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests an association between imaging biomarkers of small vessel disease and future cognitive decline in Parkinson's disease (PD). Recently, magnetic resonance imaging-visible perivascular space (PVS) has been considered as an imaging biomarker of small vessel disease, but its effect on cognitive decline in PD is yet to be investigated. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate whether PVS can independently predict cognitive decline in PD. METHODS: A t
Background Group comparison results associating cortical thinning and Parkinson disease (PD) dementia (PDD) are limited in their application to clinical settings. Purpose To investigate whether cortical thickness from MRI can help predict conversion from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to dementia in PD at an individual level using a machine learning-based model. Materials and Methods In this retrospective study, patients with PD and MCI who underwent MRI from September 2008 to November 2016 wer
Dilated perivascular space (dPVS) has recently been reported as a biomarker for cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, comprehensive interrelationships between various clinical risk factors, dPVS, white-matter hyperintensities (WMH), cognition, and motor function in PD have not been studied yet. The purpose of this study was to test whether dPVS might mediate the effect of clinical risk factors on WMH, cognition, and motor symptoms in PD patients. A total of 154 PD patients w
We investigated the narrow-sense heritability of MRI-visible dilated perivascular spaces (dPVS) in healthy young adult twins and nontwin siblings (138 monozygotic, 79 dizygotic twin pairs, and 133 nontwin sibling pairs; 28.7 ± 3.6 years) from the Human Connectome Project. dPVS volumes within basal ganglia (BGdPVS) and white matter (WMdPVS) were automatically calculated on three-dimensional T2-weighted MRI. In univariate analysis, heritability estimates of BGdPVS and WMdPVS after age and sex adju
Regardless of cognitive status, altered local intrinsic activities were found in HIV patients. The orbitofrontal cortex and primary sensorimotor area were more disrupted in HAND relative to HIV-IC and correlated with behavioral performance, suggesting these areas are relevant to cognitive impairment in HIV patients.
Degeneration of the substantia innominata (SI) is significantly correlated with cognitive performance in Parkinson's disease (PD). We examined functional and structural patterns of SI degeneration in drug-naïve PD patients according to the duration of parkinsonism before mild cognitive impairment (MCI) diagnosis. Twenty PD patients with a shorter duration (PD-MCI-SD, <1 year), 18 patients with a longer duration (PD-MCI-LD, ≥1 year), and 29 patients with intact cognition (PD-IC) were included. Se
Postpartum working memory decline has been investigated mostly with neuropsychological tests, but neural evidence is almost unknown. Here we investigated task-related neural alterations during working memory task (n-back) and intrinsic alterations during resting-state (rs) in postpartum women using functional MRI (fMRI). Behaviorally, postpartum women showed comparable working memory performances to the controls although there was a tendency of prolonged response time. fMRI analysis results show
The increased incidence of dilated perivascular spaces (dPVSs) visible on MRI has been observed with advancing age, but the relevance of PVS dilatation to normal aging across the lifespan has yet to be fully clarified. In the current study, we sought to find out the age dependence of dPVSs by exploring changes in different characteristics of PVS dilatation across a wide range of age. For 1220 healthy subjects aged between 18 and 100 years, PVSs were automatically segmented and characteristics of
Prospective memory (PM) refers to the ability to remember to execute an intended action in the future. For successful PM performance, both top-down strategic monitoring and bottom-up spontaneous retrieval processes need to be appropriately recruited. We assessed PM performance and used fMRI to discover relevant neural correlates and possible predictors for PM performance in 25 postpartum and 26 nulliparous age- and education-matched women. Postpartum women showed decreased PM performance, a high
INTRODUCTION: For the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) and atypical parkinsonism (AP) using neuroimaging, structural measures have been largely employed since structural abnormalities are most noticeable in the diseases. Functional abnormalities have been known as well, though less clearly seen, and thus, the addition of functional measures to structural measures is expected to be more informative for the diagnosis. Here, we aimed to assess whether multimodal neuroimaging measures of struct
Considering brain structural alterations as neurodegenerative consequences of Parkinson's disease (PD), we sought to infer the progression of PD via the ordering of brain structural alterations from cross-sectional MRI observations. Having measured cortical thinning in gray matter (GM) regions and disintegrity in white matter (WM) regions as MRI markers of structural alterations for 130 patients with PD (69 ± 10 years, 72 men), stochastic simulation based on the probabilistic relationship betwee
While drug-induced parkinsonism (DIP) is mainly caused by blockage of the dopaminergic pathway, multiple neurotransmitter systems besides the dopaminergic system are involved in Parkinson's disease (PD). Therefore, alterations found in both DIP and PD might be manifestations of dopaminergic dysfunction. To prove this hypothesis, we aimed to define the areas commonly involved in DIP and PD and determine whether the overlapping areas were associated with the dopaminergic system. 68 PD patients, 69
