SJR Q1Clinical and Experimental OtorhinolaryngologyOA

This study demonstrated the reconstructive advantages of the angular branch-based STFF, long pedicle, low flap failure, 3-dimensional nature of bone and soft tissues (chimeric flap), and small rate of donor site morbidity with free ambulation. This flap is an excellent option for use in complex three-dimensional head and neck reconstruction.

SJR Q1Otology & Neurotology

OBJECTIVES: The aim of study was to evaluate the subjective changes of taste and salivation after middle ear surgery according to chorda tympani nerve (CTN) injury. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Tertiary referral center. PATIENTS: We enrolled 180 patients older than 13 years old who received middle ear surgery. INTERVENTIONS: The patients were classified into cut, manipulated, and intact groups according to intraoperative assessments of the CTN. The patients responded taste an

Objectives. This study aimed to compare the outcome of endoscopic and microscopic tympanoplasty. Methods. This was a retrospective comparative study of 73 patients (35 males and 38 females) who underwent type I tympanoplasty at Samsung Medical Center from April to December 2014. The subjects were classified into two groups; endoscopic tympanoplasty (ET, n=25), microscopic tympanoplasty (MT, n=48). Demographic data, perforation size of tympanic membrane at preoperative state, pure tone audiometri

The use of artificial intelligence models to predict survival in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Most recent survival prediction has been based on TNM staging, which does not provide individualized information. However, clinical factors including performance status, age, sex, and smoking might influence survival. Therefore, we used artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze various clinical factors to precisely predict the survival of patients with larynx squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). We included patients with LSCC (N = 1026) who received definitive treatment from 2002 to 2020. Age, sex, smo

Early Injection Laryngoplasty With a Long-Lasting Material in Patients With Potentially Recoverable Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis
Nayeon Choi, Hokyung Jin, Hack Jung Kim, Young‐Ik Son
SJR Q1Clinical and Experimental OtorhinolaryngologyOA

Early IL with a long-lasting material can be safely performed to improve voice quality and to reduce aspiration episode for the patients with postoperative UVFP, regardless of recovery from the paralysis. The amounts of improvement in the subjective and objective voice parameters were significantly greater in patients who showed spontaneous recovery from UVFP when compared with those in patients who did not.

SJR Q1Journal of Surgical Oncology

INTRODUCTION: Accurate tumor-node-metastasis(TNM) staging of oral cavity cancer(OCC) is very important in the management of this dismal disease. However, stage migration from cTNM to pTNM was found in a portion of OCC patients. The objective of this study was to determine the possible causes of discrepancy between cTNM and pTNM in OCC and the clinical impacts of stage migration. METHODS: Clinical and pathological data of 252 OCC patients were retrospectively reviewed and compared each other. Cli

Comparison of oral steroid regimens for acute acoustic trauma caused by gunshot noise exposure

SJR Q3The Journal of Laryngology & Otology

BACKGROUND: There are no definite guidelines regarding the most adequate steroid regimens for acute acoustic trauma. OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the dose-dependent differing benefits of oral steroids on hearing improvement following acute acoustic trauma. METHODS: Twenty-nine patients treated with oral steroids following a diagnosis of unilateral acute acoustic trauma were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were sorted into two groups with an oral steroid regimen. Group 1 received a 14-day course of

SJR Q1The Laryngoscope

OBJECTIVES: In case of insufficient voice improvement after injection laryngoplasty (IL), additional IL will be one of the next option of treatments. However, little is known about the voice outcomes regarding an additional IL. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective comparative study in single institution. METHODS: We enrolled the patients of unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP), who received IL (N = 76) twice because of insufficient voice improvement. The etiologies of UVFP were related with thoracic an

Spontaneous regression of metastatic cancer cells in the lymph node: a case report
Nayeon Choi, Jae Keun Cho, Chung‐Hwan Baek, Young Hyeh Ko, Han‐Sin Jeong
SJR Q3BMC Research NotesOA

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous regression of a malignant tumor is the phenomenon of disappearance of cancer cells without any treatments and it can be induced by an enhanced tumor-targeting immune response. However, there has not been a comprehensive immunological overview to compare the tumor-regressed lymph nodes and metastatic lymph nodes in the same patient. CASE PRESENTATION: We conducted a histologic analysis of various immune cells in an Asian female patient with buccal cancer (squamous cell car

Precision surgery for cancer: a new surgical concept in individual tumor biology-based image-guided surgery
Nayeon Choi, Han‐Sin Jeong
Precision and Future MedicineOA

Surgery has long been a cornerstone of cancer treatment in many types of cancer. Traditionally, intraoperative assessment of the resection margin is largely dependent on visual inspection and palpation of tumors, with the aid of frozen section analysis. Although preoperative imaging can provide gross anatomical information, in situ translation of these images to the operation field is challenging. With the advancement of molecular imaging technology and its clinical application, the gap between
