15Interlayer excitons were observed at the heterojunctions in van der Waals heterostructures (vdW HSs). However, it is not known how the excitonic phenomena are affected by the stacking order. Here, we report twist-angle-dependent interlayer excitons in MoSe 2 /WSe 2 vdW HSs based on photoluminescence (PL) and vdW-corrected density functional theory calculations. The PL intensity of the interlayer excitons depends primarily on the twist angle: It is enhanced at coherently stacked angles of 0° and
We apply the ab initio spin density functional theory to study magnetism in all-carbon nanostructures. We find that particular systems, which are related to schwarzite and contain no undercoordinated carbon atoms, carry a net magnetic moment in the ground state. We postulate that, in this and other nonalternant aromatic systems with negative Gaussian curvature, unpaired spins can be introduced by sterically protected carbon radicals.
We performed first-principles calculations to investigate the hydrogen storage characteristics of carbon-based 3-D solid structures, called covalently bonded graphenes (CBGs). Using the density functional method and the Møller-Plesset perturbation method, we show that H2 molecular binding in the CBGs is stronger than that on an isolated graphene with an increase of 20 to approximately 150% in binding energy, which is very promising for storage at ambient conditions. We also suggest that the CBGs
Despite the advantage of high capacity, the practical use of the silicon anode is still hindered by large volume expansion during the severe pulverization lithiation process, which results in electrical contact loss and rapid capacity fading. Here, a combined electrochemical and computational study on the factor for accommodating volume expansion of silicon-based anodes is shown. 1D silicon-based nanostructures with different internal spaces to explore the effect of spatial ratio of voids and th
Abstract Ultrasmall Co 9 S 8 nanoparticles are introduced on the basal plane of MoS 2 to fabricate a covalent 0D–2D heterostructure that enhances the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of electrochemical water splitting. In the heterostructure, separate phases of Co 9 S 8 and MoS 2 are formed, but they are connected by Co–S–Mo type covalent bonds. The charge redistribution from Co to Mo occurring at the interface enhances the electron‐doped characteristics of MoS 2 to generate electron‐r
Abstract Two-dimensional materials equipped with strong spin–orbit coupling can display novel electronic, spintronic, and topological properties originating from the breaking of time or inversion symmetry. A lot of interest has focused on the valley degrees of freedom that can be used to encode binary information. By performing ab initio time-dependent density functional simulation on MoS 2 , here we show that the spin is not only locked to the valley momenta but strongly coupled to the optical
The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of the most important pathways for producing pure and clean hydrogen. Although platinum (Pt) is the most efficient HER electrocatalyst, its practical application is significantly hindered by high-cost and scarcity. In this work, an Mo x C with incorporated Mo vacancies and macroporous inverse opal-like (IOL) structure (Mo x C-IOL) was synthesized and studied as a low-cost efficient HER electrocatalyst. The macroporous IOL structure was controllably fa
Heteroatom doping into the graphitic frameworks have been intensively studied for the development of metal-free electrocatalysts. However, the choice of heteroatoms is limited to non-metallic elements and heteroatom-doped graphitic materials do not satisfy commercial demands in terms of cost and stability. Here we realize doping semimetal antimony (Sb) at the edges of graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) via a simple mechanochemical reaction between pristine graphite and solid Sb. The covalent bonding
Magnetic anisotropy often plays a central role in various static and dynamic properties of magnetic materials. In particular, for two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials, as inferred from the Mermin-Wagner theorem, it is an essential prerequisite for stabilizing ferromagnetic order. In this work, we carry out first-principles calculations for a CrI3 monolayer and investigate how its magnetic anisotropy is interrelated to adjustable parameters governing the underlying electronic s
This article briefly summarizes the research activities in the field of hydrogen storage in sorbent materials and reports our recent works and future directions for the design of such materials. Distinct features of sorption-based hydrogen storage methods are described compared with metal hydrides and complex chemical hydrides. We classify the studies of hydrogen sorbent materials in terms of two key technical issues: (i) constructing stable framework structures with high porosity, and (ii) incr
The Kirkendall effect is a simple, novel phenomenon that may be applied for the synthesis of hollow nanostructures with designed pore structures and chemical composition. We demonstrate the use of the Kirkendall effect for silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge) nanowires (NWs) and nanoparticles (NPs) via introduction of nanoscale surface layers of SiO2 and GeO2, respectively. Depending on the reaction time, Si and Ge atoms gradually diffuse outward through the oxide layers, with pore formation in the n
Abstract Water electrolysis to produce hydrogen (H 2 ) using renewable energy is one of the most promising candidates for realizing carbon neutrality, but its reaction kinetics is hindered by sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Ruthenium (Ru) in its high‐valence state (oxide) provides one of the most active OER sites and is less costly, but thermodynamically unstable. The strong interaction between Ru nanoparticles (NPs) and nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH) 2 ) is leveraged to directly form
Only a very limited amount of the high theoretical energy density of LiCoO 2 as a cathode material has been realized, due to its irreversible deterioration when more than 0.6 mol of lithium ions are extracted. In this study, new insights into the origin of such low electrochemical reversibility, namely the structural collapse caused by electrostatic repulsion between oxygen ions during the charge process are suggested. By incorporating the partial cation migration of LiNiO 2 , which produces a s
Metal–organic frameworks, [Ni(HBTC)(dabco)] ( 2 ) and [Ni 2 (HBTC) 2 (bipy) 0.6 (dabco) 1.4 ] ( 3 ) (where H 3 BTC is 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid, dabco is 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, and bipy is 4,4′-bipyridine), were prepared via postsynthetic ligand exchanges of [Ni(HBTC)(bipy)] ( 1 ). By controlling the concentration of dabco, we could obtain not only entropically favorable 2 with completely exchanged dabco but also enthalpically favorable 3 with selectively exchanged bipy/dabco in th
