Background Data comparing outcomes in heart failure ( HF ) across Asia are limited. We examined regional variation in mortality among patients with HF enrolled in the ASIAN ‐HF (Asian Sudden Cardiac Death in Heart Failure) registry with separate analyses for those with reduced ejection fraction ( EF ; <40%) versus preserved EF (≥50%). Methods and Results The ASIAN ‐ HF registry is a prospective longitudinal study. Participants with symptomatic HF were recruited from 46 secondary care centers

BACKGROUND: Chronic lung disease (CLD) is one of the important underlying diseases of atrial fibrillation (AF). The outcomes after radiofrequency catheter ablation of AF in patients with CLD have not yet been reported. We investigated the electroanatomic alterations in pulmonary veins (PVs) in CLD patients with AF and assessed their effect on the outcomes of radiofrequency catheter ablation of AF. METHOD AND RESULTS: We assessed 15 patients who had CLD and underwent radiofrequency catheter ablat

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Atrial remodeling with fibrosis has been well-described in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). We hypothesized that the left atrial (LA)-late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) extent on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is associated with LA pressure and can be a marker for suitable candidates for non-paroxysmal AF ablation. A total of 173 AF patients with an LA-LGE area on CMR imaging were enrolled. The clinical parameters, including invasively measured LA pressure, were compared between

Incidence and etiology of sudden cardiac arrest in Koreans: A cohort from the national health insurance service database

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

The incidence of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in Asians is lower than that seen in Western populations, but there are few available data on the incidence and associated cardiac etiology of SCA in Asians. From 2002 to 2013, patients with SCA were analyzed using a cohort from the South Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) coded database. Sudden unexplained death syndrome (SUDS) was defined as cryptogenic arrest, excluding that of non-cardiac origin, coronary artery disease (CAD), cardiom

Long‐Term Outcome of Catheter Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation in Patients With Apical Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

SJR Q1Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology

INTRODUCTION: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common manifestation in cases of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Catheter ablation (CA) for AF in patients with asymmetric septal HCM (SeHCM) is selectively effective and often needs a repeat procedure. Apical HCM (ApHCM) has a better prognosis than SeHCM. However, the outcome of CA for AF in patients with ApHCM is unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eighteen patients with ApHCM (ApHCM group) and 13 SeHCM patients (SeHCM group) underwent CA for AF. Ninety

Therapeutic implications of galectin-3 in patients with atrial fibrillation

Atrial fibrosis can present as an arrhythmogenic substrate that is correlated with higher recurrence after catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation. Galectin-3, a beta-galactoside-binding lectin, is highly expressed and secreted from macrophages and is important in inflammation and fibrosis. We assessed the clinical implications of serum galectin-3 in patients with atrial fibrillation. This was a prospective cohort study of consecutive patients who underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation in

BACKGROUND: The benefits of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) for the prevention of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) are well established. However, a significant knowledge gap remains regarding current indications and utilization of ICDs in real-world settings in Asia. METHODS: Patients who underwent ICD implantation in South Korea from 2007 to 2015 were identified using the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database. We investigated trends in use of ICD for the prevention o

The Impact of Personal Thoracic Impedance on Electrical Cardioversion in Patients with Atrial Arrhythmias

Background and Objectives: Direct current cardioversion (DCCV) is a safe and useful treatment for atrial tachyarrhythmias. In the past, the energy delivered in DCCV was decided upon empirically, based only on the type of tachyarrhythmia. This conventional method does not consider individual factors and may lead to unnecessary electrical damage. Materials and Methods: We performed DCCV in patients with atrial tachyarrhythmias. The impedance and electrical current at the moment of shock were measu

Molecular Signatures of Sinus Node Dysfunction Induce Structural Remodeling in the Right Atrial Tissue.

The sinus node (SN) is located at the apex of the cardiac conduction system, and SN dysfunction (SND)-characterized by electrical remodeling-is generally attributed to idiopathic fibrosis or ischemic injuries in the SN. SND is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disorders, including syncope, heart failure, and atrial arrhythmias, particularly atrial fibrillation. One of the histological SND hallmarks is degenerative atrial remodeling that is associated with conduction abnormalities

Background and Objectives: Left atrial hypertension is one of the pathophysiologies of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. We hypothesized that left atrial pressure response (LAPR) to incremental pacing is higher in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and can predict left ventricular diastolic dysfunction. Materials and Methods: Patients requiring left atrial access as a part of a therapeutic procedure for AF (n = 204, AF group) or supraventricular tachycardia (n = 34, control gro
