Purpose: Asthma–COPD overlap (ACO) is heterogeneous in nature and requires a unified diagnostic approach. We investigated the urinary levels of L-histidine, a precursor of histamine related to inflammatory responses, as a new candidate biomarker for diagnosing this condition. Patients and methods: We performed a prospective multicenter cohort study with retrospective analysis of 107 patients, who were divided into three groups: asthma, COPD, and ACO, according to the Spanish guidelines algorithm

SJR Q1International Journal of COPDOA

Introduction: The use of antibiotics is based on the clinician's experience and judgment, and antibiotics may often be overused in the treatment of acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). Eosinophils have been studied as biomarkers of bacterial infection and prognostic factors in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and AECOPD. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine whether eosinophils could be used to determine bacterial infection in AECOPD event

Despite remarkable success in the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis (TB), it remains one of the most devastating infectious diseases worldwide. Management of TB requires an efficient and timely diagnostic strategy. In this study, we comprehensively characterized the plasma lipidome of TB patients, then selected candidate lipid and lipid-related gene biomarkers using a data-driven, knowledge-based framework. Among 93 lipids that were identified as potential biomarker candidates, ether-link

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infection diagnosis remains a challenge due to its overlapping clinical symptoms with tuberculosis (TB), leading to inappropriate treatment. Herein, we employed noninvasive metabolic phenotyping coupled with comprehensive statistical modeling to discover potential biomarkers for the differential diagnosis of NTM infection versus TB. Urine samples from 19 NTM and 35 TB patients were collected, and untargeted metabolomics was performed using rapid liquid chromatog

In this study, we investigated the lipidome of tuberculosis patients during standard chemotherapy to discover biosignatures that could aid therapeutic monitoring. UPLC-QToF MS was used to analyze 82 baseline and treatment plasma samples of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Subsequently, a data-driven and knowledge-based workflow, including robust annotation, statistical analysis, and functional analysis, was applied to assess lipid profiles during treatment. Overall, the lipids species from

SJR Q2Tuberculosis & respiratory diseasesOA

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a common disease that occurs comorbidly in patients with chronic inflammatory airway diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and asthma-COPD overlap syndrome (ACOS). However, the prevalence of osteoporosis in patients with ACOS has not widely been evaluated. Therefore, we investigated the prevalence of osteoporosis and its relationship with the clinical parameters of patients with asthma, COPD, and ACOS. METHODS: This was a retrospect

Microbial Population, Aflatoxin Contamination and Predominant Aspergillus Species in Korean Stored Rice
오지연, 상미경, 이호정, 류문일, 김기덕, 오지은

We evaluated microbial populations and aflatoxin production in unhulled and white rice from rice processing complexes of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation in five regions in Korea and identified three predominant Aspergillus species. Fungal and bacterial populations in rice samples were significantly different between regions in 2007. Aflatoxins were also detected and varied at the levels of 2.45 - 3.43 ng per g unhulled rice grain and 1.29 - 2.09 ng per g white rice grain. Unhull

Stored rice was collected from rice processing complexes of National Agricultural Cooperative Federation of 11 regions in Korea to evaluate the occurrence of fungi and bacteria and to identify the predominant fungi and bacteria to the genus levels. Most rice samples generally produced the higher levels of fungi and bacteria than white rice. The occurrence of fungi and bacteria varied in various locations of Korea. Among fungi observed, Aspergillus spp. and Penicillium spp. were dominant in the s

BACKGROUND: Combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema (CPFE) is frequently associated with lung cancer. However, the impact and outcomes of lung cancer in patients with CPFE are unclear. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the impact of lung cancer in patients with CPFE in terms of acute exacerbation (AE) and mortality, and identified the mortality predictors of patients with CPFE and lung cancer. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 12-year medical records of patients at the Korea University Guro Hospit

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Insight into the metabolic biosignature of tuberculosis (TB) may inform clinical care, reduce adverse effects, and facilitate metabolism-informed therapeutic development. However, studies often yield inconsistent findings regarding the metabolic profiles of TB. Herein, we conducted an untargeted metabolomics study using plasma from 63 Korean TB patients and 50 controls. Metabolic features were integrated with the data of another cohort from China (35 TB patients and 35 controls) for a global fun

Combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema (CPFE) patients visit hospitals frequently due to acute exacerbations (AEs); however, the predictors of CPFE AE have not been comprehensively described in literature. Thus, we investigated the predicting factors of AE in CPFE patients. We retrospectively reviewed medical records from the past 12 years at Korea University Guro Hospital.
