Smart Bombs, Serial Killing, and the Rapture: The Vanishing Bodies of Imperial Apocalypticism Peter Yoonsuk Paik (bio) Abstract This essay considers the surge in apocalyptic imagery in American popular culture and politics after 9/11. It commences by contrasting the intellectual justifications for a new American imperialism (and a warlike foreign policy) among conservative thinkers, and the strange ideological partner of this neo-imperialism—the apocalypticism of the Christian fundamentalist Rig

Right Site, Wrong Route ― Cannulating the Left Internal Jugular Vein
Peter Y. Paik, Sanjay K Arukala, Anupam Sule
CureusOA

Central venous catheters are placed in approximately five million patients annually in the US. The preferred site of insertion is one with fewer risks and easier access. Although the right internal jugular vein is preferred, on occasion, the left internal jugular may have to be accessed. A patient was admitted for septic shock, cerebrovascular accident, and non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. A central venous line was needed for antibiotic and vasopressor administration. Due to traum

SJR Q2Telos

During the past decade and a half, South Korean television shows, pop music, video games, and films have achieved a surprising degree of success in a variety of regions across the globe. Gaining enthusiastic audiences from the Philippines to France, from Thailand to Israel, and from Indonesia to Peru, the phenomenon known as “Hallyu,” or the “Korean Wave,” has enabled the culture industry in South Korea to attain a level of worldwide popularity typically reserved for Hollywood films or British p

The Post-Apocalyptic Novel in the Twenty-First Century: Modernity Beyond Salvage. Palgrave Macmillan, 2016. Post-apocalyptic fiction has become arguably the defining genre of the contemporary period. Between Trauma and Tragedy

This chapter evaluates the Matrix Trilogy and V for Vendetta, analyzing the incapacity to compose a credible and coherent narrative about revolutionary change based on the idea of a political helplessness believing that there is no alternative to liberal capitalism. The first film in the Matrix trilogy, The Matrix, treats the individual’s liberation from an oppressive system, while the sequel, The Matrix Reloaded, elucidates and overcomes the predicament in which radical politics finds itself ca

The Self Without Interest: The Return of Sacrifice in The Leftovers
Peter Y. Paik
SJR Q3Science Fiction Studies

While it is often said that the destruction of the world is easier to imagine than the end of capitalism, this essay reads The Leftovers by Tom Perrotta as a work of speculative fiction that explores the demise of the values that underpin the social order and economic system of bourgeois capitalism. The novel is set in a world that has experienced the mass disappearance of millions, in a manner that recalls the Rapture. The consequence of this supernatural catastrophe is to bring about a fundame

Apocalypse and Extinction
Peter Y. Paik

One of the most striking cultural developments in recent years is the increasing willingness of scholars, intellectuals, and producers of mass culture to express the view that human beings are hopelessly destructive life-forms. Since the emergence of modern industry, the activities of human beings have inflicted incalculable damage to the natural world in the form of habitat destruction and the loss of biodiversity, the acidification of the oceans, the depletion of non-renewable resources, and
