15Abstract Solution‐processed zinc oxide nanocrystals (ZnO NCs) hybridized with insulating poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) are introduced as a cathode interlayer in bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic cells based on poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT):(6,6)‐phenyl‐C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PC 61 BM) blends. The performance of devices with ZnO‐PEG interlayers exhibit an excellent maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.4% with a fill factor (FF) of 0.69 under optimized conditions. This enhan
The recent advancements in multivalued logic gates represent a rapid paradigm shift in semiconductor technology toward a new era of hyper Moore's law. Particularly, the significant evolution of materials is guiding multivalued logic systems toward a breakthrough gradually, whereby they are transcending the limits of conventional binary logic systems in terms of all the essential figures of merit, i.e., power dissipation, operating speed, circuit complexity, and, of course, the level of the integ
Photon harvesting in organic solar cells is highly dependent on the anisotropic nature of the optoelectronic properties of photoactive materials. Here, we demonstrate an efficient approach to dramatically enhance photon harvesting in planar heterojunction solar cells by using a graphene-organic heterointerface. A large area, residue-free monolayer graphene is inserted at anode interface to serve as an atomically thin epitaxial template for growing highly orientated pentacene crystals with lying-
Solution-based processing of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials is highly desirable, especially for the low-temperature large-area fabrication of flexible multifunctional devices. MXenes, an emerging family of 2D materials composed of transition metal carbides, carbonitrides, or nitrides, provide excellent electrical and electrochemical properties through aqueous processing. Here, we further expand the horizon of MXene processing by introducing a polymeric superdispersant for MXene nanosheets. S
This article reviews the recent advances in organic electronics based on polymer blends with one-dimensional (1D) nanowires (NWs) of π-conjugated polymers. Self-assembled polymer semiconducting NWs are fascinating building blocks for their directional extension of inter- and intramolecular π-conjugation. This extensive conjugation provides unique electrical and optical properties that benefit applications in organic electronic devices. Outstanding performances are particularly expected from blen
Stereoisomerism, arising from the distinctive spatial arrangements of atoms despite identical molecular formulae, often displays different chemical reactivities. Herein, we demonstrate how geometric isomerism of multifunctional electrolyte additives affects aqueous zinc metal batteries. Inspired by natural bacteria, we compared trans-butenedioic acid (fumaric acid) and its cis-isomer (maleic acid), revealing different hydrogen bonding dynamics and solvation environments, as confirmed by femtosec
Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have recently emerged as a feasible candidate to realize the next generation of printable electronics. Especially, their chemical versatility and the unique redox-based operating principle have provided new possibilities in high-functioning logic circuitry beyond the traditional binary Boolean logic. Here, a simple strategy to electrochemically realize monolithic multi-valued logic transistors is presented, which is one of the most promising branches o
Interfacial energetics determines the performance of organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells based on a thin film of organic semiconductor blends. Here, an approach to modulating the “carrier selectivity” at the charge collecting interfaces and the consequent variations in the nongeminate charge carrier recombination dynamics in OPV devices are demonstrated. A ferroelectric blend interfacial layer composed of a solution‐processable ferroelectric polymer and a wide bandgap semiconductor is introduced a
Solution-processed, high-speed, and polarity-selective organic vertical Schottky barrier (SB) transistors and logic gates are presented. The organic layer, which is a bulk heterojunction (BHJ) composed of PBDB-T and PC71BM, is employed to simultaneously realize vertical electron and hole transports through the separate p-channel and n-channel. The gate-modulated graphene work functions enable broad modulation of SB heights at both the graphene-PBDB-T and graphene-PC71BM het
Abstract The emergence of organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) has opened a new era of printable electronics and bioelectronics, due to their unique advantages including innately superior transconductance and biocompatibility. Despite the foreseeable advancements available from their further implementations in fundamental logic circuitry, however, insufficient operation speeds and short compatibilities to scaling‐down have so far hindered advanced integrations other than biosensing and bi
Recent advances in metal additive manufacturing (AM) have provided new opportunities for prompt designs of prototypes and facile personalization of products befitting the fourth industrial revolution. In this regard, its feasibility of becoming a green technology, which is not an inherent aspect of AM, is gaining more interests. A particular interest in adapting and understanding of eco-friendly ingredients can set its important groundworks. Here, we demonstrate a water-based solid-phase binding
Optical data acquisition has been set as one of the milestones to testify the developments aimed at harnessing the full potential of the spatial and temporal data processing capabilities of the advanced semiconductor technology. A highly promising approach to drive the level of acquisition beyond the current technological node is the vertical integration of multiple photodetectors. However, vertical integration so far requires the same level of circuit complexity as lateral integration from the
Abstract Development of a novel high performing inorganic p ‐type thin film transistor could pave the way for new transparent electronic devices. This complements the widely commercialized n‐type counterparts, indium‐gallium‐zinc‐oxide (IGZO). Of the few potential candidates, copper monoiodide (CuI) stands out. It boasts visible light transparency and high intrinsic hole mobility (>40 cm 2 V −1 s −1 ), and is suitable for various low‐temperature processes. However, the performance of reported
One of the most popular approaches to improve the performance of organic photonic devices has been to control the electrically heterogeneous charge-transferring interfaces via chemical modifications. Despite intense research efforts, however, the rapid pace of material evolution through the chemical versatility of the organic compound allows only limited room for the fine-tuning of the interfaces exclusive to specific materials. This limitation leads to an ill-controlled charge recombination beh
