15Environmental pollution arising from plastic waste is a major global concern. Plastic macroparticles, microparticles, and nanoparticles have the potential to affect marine ecosystems and human health. It is generally accepted that microplastic particles are not harmful or at best minimal to human health. However direct contact with microplastic particles may have possible adverse effect in cellular level. Primary polystyrene (PS) particles were the focus of this study, and we investigated the po
There has been a remarkable improvement in the treatment strategy of secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) over the last few decades. Indebted to the improvement in device technology and procedural techniques, transcatheter closure of ASD is currently accepted as the treatment of choice in most patients with secundum ASD. Recent generation devices enable easy and safe deployment of device with the properties of adequate flexibility, re-capturability and repositioning. Use of biocompatible material
On October 2020, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved remdesivir as the first drug for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), increasing remdesivir prescriptions worldwide. However, potential cardiovascular (CV) toxicities associated with remdesivir remain unknown. We aimed to characterize the CV adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with remdesivir using VigiBase, an individual case safety report database of the World Health Organization (WHO). Disproportionality
This study demonstrates the possibility of developing a rapidly degradable chitosan-based multilayer film for controlled drug release. The chitosan (CHI)-based multilayer nanofilms were prepared with three different types of anions, hyaluronic acid (HA), alginic acid (ALG) and tannic acid (TA). Taking advantage of the Layer-by-Layer (LBL) assembly, each multilayer film has different morphology, porosity and thickness depending on their ionic density, molecular structure and the polymer functiona
Abstract Bioprosthetic valves are employed to replace defective heart valves. However, structural degeneration is prevalent in bioprosthetic valves because the heart valve leaflets are exposed to extreme and repetitive cardiovascular pressure. Herein, a silk fibroin‐based heart valve leaflet, which executes the physiological role of a heart valve, is developed. To this end, a templated assembly technology is developed. Notably, a physically optimal hierarchical structure for replacing the natura
OBJECTIVES: The clinical outcome of children with severe acute myocarditis who require mechanical circulatory support is not well known. Therefore, we studied the survival and clinical courses of patients with acute fulminant myocarditis supported by extracorporeal life support (ECLS). METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of 13 consecutive children with acute fulminant myocarditis who were treated with ECLS between April 2013 and April 2015. Demographics, initial symptoms, laborato
BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare procedural, early and long-term outcome of device closure of atrial septal defect (ASD) between large ASD patients and very large ASD patients. METHODS: We carried a retrospective study of adult large ASD (defined as ≥25 mm) treated by percutaneous closure using Amplatzer septal occluder during 12-year period (May 2003-February 2015) at a single tertiary center. A total of 269 patients were divided into 2 groups, according to the pre-procedural maximal ASD
BACKGROUND: Despite the development of several imaging modalities for diagnosing Fontan-associated liver disease (FALD), there is no optimal protocol for the follow-up of FALD. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify factors related to liver fibrosis using biopsy reports and to identify alternative noninvasive modalities that could better reflect liver histological changes in FALD. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following the PRISMA guideline
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a severe medical condition characterized by elevated blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries. Nitric oxide (NO) is a gaseous signaling molecule with potent vasodilator effects; however, inhaled NO is limited in clinical practice because of the need for tracheal intubation and the toxicity of high NO concentrations. In this study, inhalable NO-releasing microspheres (NO inhalers) are fabricated to deliver nanomolar NO through a nebulizer. Two NO inhalers
This paper presents an idea for a thermosiphon that uniquely implements two integrated evaporators to cool two HTS (High Temperature Superconductor) bulk sets in different locations, simultaneously. A so-called double-evaporator thermosiphon was designed, fabricated and tested using nitrogen as the working fluid under sub-atmospheric pressure conditions. The operating target temperature was approximately 65 K. To confirm the feasibility of the double-evaporator thermosiphon, experiments during t
Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is a rare complication of hyperthyroidism, with recurrent muscle paralysis and hypokalemia that are caused by an intracellular shift of potassium. TPP is relatively common in Asian males, but is extremely rare in children and adolescents, even for those of Asian descent. We describe a 16-year-old Korean adolescent presenting with a two-week history of episodic leg weakness in the morning. He showed sinus tachycardia, lower leg weakness, and hypokalemia. Thyroi
A 29-year-old woman was referred to our institute for symptomatic hypoxemia. Her dyspnea was aggravated while sitting or standing and relieved while in supine position. She did not have any pulmonary disease. Transthoracic echocardiography and heart computed tomography revealed an underestimated small atrial septal defect (ASD) with a left-to-right shunt. A cardiac catheterization was performed to evaluate pulmonary hypertension. It revealed a normal pulmonary artery pressure and a large ASD wit
Myriad lung diseases are life threatening and macrophages play a key role in both physiological and pathological processes. Macrophages have each pro-/anti-inflammatory phenotype, and each lung disease can be aggravated by over-polarized macrophage. Therefore, development of a method capable of mediating the macrophage phenotype is one of the solutions for lung disease treatment. For mediating the phenotype of macrophages, the pulmonary delivery system (PDS) is widely used due to its advantages,
Purpose: This study examined the efficacy and safety of selexipag in treating pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) associated with congenital heart disease (CHD). Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of patients with CHD-associated PAH, treated with selexipag since December 2017. Thirteen adult patients (mean age, 45.4 years; women, 77%) were treated with selexipag as add-on therapy. Baseline characteristics, World Health Organization functional class, 6-minute walking dist
