SJR Q2Yonsei Medical JournalOA

PURPOSE: The surgical robotic system is superior to traditional laparoscopy in regards to 3-dimensional images and better instrumentations. Robotic surgery for hepatic resection has not yet been extensively reported. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between March and May 2007, we performed 3 robot-assisted left lateral sectionectomies of the liver. Case 1 had a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), case 2 had colon cancer with liver metastasis, and case 3 had intrahepatic duct stones. RESULTS: All patients had s

OBJECTIVE: To identify optimal surgical methods and the risk factors for long-term survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma accompanied by macroscopic bile duct tumor thrombus (BDTT). SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Prognoses of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma accompanied by BDTT have been known to be poor. There have been significant controversies regarding optimal surgical approaches and risk factors because of the low incidence and small number of cases in previous reports. METHODS:

SJR Q1World Journal of Surgery

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the treatment of choice for benign gallbladder disease. Gallbladder cancers have been found following LC. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the survival outcome and prognosis of incidental gallbladder cancer diagnosed after LC. METHODS: From January 2002 to December 2007, 3,145 patients underwent LC at the Department of Surgery, Korea University Medical Center. Of these, 33 patients (1.05%) were diagnosed with gallbladder cancer after L

Molecular mechanism of HIF-1-independent VEGF expression in a hepatocellular carcinoma cell line
Sae Byeol Choi
SJR Q1International Journal of Molecular MedicineOA

Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) is a master transcription factor that plays a central role in the hypoxic expression of various genes. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a known target gene of HIF-1α, has been shown to be induced by hypoxia through a HIF-1α-independent pathway. HIF-1α dominant-negative lentiviral vectors were introduced to decrease the expression of HIF in Hep3B cells. Cells were incubated under normoxic or hypoxic conditions. We performed a VEGF enzyme-linked immunos

SJR Q1Journal of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic SciencesOA

Surgical resection is not indicated in patients with portal hypertension in the current guideline of Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage. We report a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the impact of clinically significant portal hypertension on survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) following hepatectomy. Searched data in PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were reviewed and 11 publications were included in the meta-analysis. The inclusion criteria of

SJR Q1Scandinavian Journal of Surgery

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The prognosis for patients with ampulla of Vater cancer is better than other periampullary cancers. The aim of the present study is to determine the clinicopathologic factors predictive of survival and recurrence in patients with ampulla of Vater cancer. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From 1991 to 2008, we identified and reviewed 78 patients with ampulla of Vater cancer retrospectively. Clinicopathologic factors possibly influencing survival and recurrence were statistically analyzed

Duodenal adenocarcinoma is a rare cancer, contributing <10 % of periampullary carcinoma. This study reviews the single center experience of duodenal adenocarcinoma and analyzes the clinical and pathological factors to predict survival and recurrence. The records of 50 patients with duodenal adenocarcinoma who underwent surgical exploration or resection from 1995 to 2010 were reviewed retrospectively. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify the clinicopathological factors

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

In cases of large hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), neoadjuvant treatment such as transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and radiation therapy can be performed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of these treatments prior to hepatic resection. Between January 1994 and May 2007, 16 patients with HCC greater than 5 cm in size were treated with TACE and radiation therapy prior to hepatic resection. The clinicopathologic factors were reviewed retrospectively. Of the 16 patients, there w

Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) of the pancreas is a rare neoplasm that accounts for about 1 to 2 per cent of all pancreatic tumors. The aim of this study was to delineate the clinicopathological characteristics and surgical outcomes of solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas. We retrospectively reviewed the clinicopathological characteristics and surgical outcomes of 18 patients who underwent surgery for SPN of the pancreas between January 1, 2001 and November 1, 2010.
