15Iron–nitrogen on carbon (Fe–N/C) catalysts have emerged as promising nonprecious metal catalysts (NPMCs) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in energy conversion and storage devices. It has been widely suggested that an active site structure for Fe–N/C catalysts contains Fe–N x coordination. However, the preparation of high-performance Fe–N/C catalysts mostly involves a high-temperature pyrolysis step, which generates not only catalytically active Fe–N x sites, but also less active large iron-ba
This review addresses the recent developments and progress in the synthesis, structure and properties of MXenes, as well as their energy conversion and storage and related applications.
Nanostructured carbon materials doped with a variety of heteroatoms have shown promising electrocatalytic activity in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, understanding of the working principles that underpin the superior ORR activity observed with doped nanocarbons is still limited to predictions based on theoretical calculations. Herein, we demonstrate, for the first time, that the enhanced ORR activity in doped nanocarbons can be correlated with the variation in their nanoscale work
Carbon monoxide oxidation over ruthenium catalysts has shown an unusual catalytic behavior. Here we report a particle size effect on CO oxidation over Ru nanoparticle (NP) catalysts. Uniform Ru NPs with a tunable particle size from 2 to 6 nm were synthesized by a polyol reduction of Ru(acac)(3) precursor in the presence of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) stabilizer. The measurement of catalytic activity of CO oxidation over two-dimensional Ru NPs arrays under oxidizing reaction conditions (40 Torr CO and
Abstract A highly efficient, metal‐free carbon nanocatalyst is presented that possesses abundant active, oxygenated graphitic edge sites. The edge site‐rich nanocarbon catalyst exhibits about 28 times higher activity for H 2 O 2 production than a basal plane‐rich carbon nanotube with a H 2 O 2 selectivity over 90 %. The oxidative treatment further promotes the H 2 O 2 generation activity to reach close to the thermodynamic limit. The optimized nanocarbon catalyst shows a very high H 2 O 2 produc
Abstract Chlorine evolution reaction (CER) is a critical anode reaction in chlor-alkali electrolysis. Although precious metal-based mixed metal oxides (MMOs) have been widely used as CER catalysts, they suffer from the concomitant generation of oxygen during the CER. Herein, we demonstrate that atomically dispersed Pt−N 4 sites doped on a carbon nanotube (Pt 1 /CNT) can catalyse the CER with excellent activity and selectivity. The Pt 1 /CNT catalyst shows superior CER activity to a Pt nanopartic
We report the use of noble metal-free ordered mesoporous Co3O4 spinels (meso-Co3O4), templated from KIT-6 mesoporous silica, as highly active and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for both oxygen evolution and reduction reactions (OER and ORR, respectively). The meso-Co3O4 nanostructures showed high activity for OER in an alkaline medium (0.1 M KOH), which makes them comparable to the most active Ir/C catalyst and better than Co3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) and the Pt/C catalyst. Furthermore, meso-
Nanoframe electrocatalysts have attracted great interest due to their inherently high active surface area per a given mass. Although recent progress has enabled the preparation of single nanoframe structures with a variety of morphologies, more complex nanoframe structures such as a double-layered nanoframe have not yet been realized. Herein, we report a rational synthetic strategy for a structurally robust Ir-based multimetallic double-layered nanoframe (DNF) structure, nanoframe@nanoframe. By
Nanoporous metal oxide materials are ubiquitous in the material sciences because of their numerous potential applications in various areas, including adsorption, catalysis, energy conversion and storage, optoelectronics, and drug delivery. While synthetic strategies for the preparation of siliceous nanoporous materials are well-established, nonsiliceous metal oxide-based nanoporous materials still present challenges. Herein, we report a novel synthetic strategy that exploits a metal-organic fram
(NBCFM), which shows superior activity and durability for oxygen electrode reactions to single and double perovskites. When hybridized with nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO), the resulting NBCFM/N-rGO catalyst shows further boosted bifunctional oxygen electrode activity (0.698 V), which surpasses that of Pt/C (0.801 V) and Ir/C (0.769 V) catalysts and which, among the perovskite-based electrocatalysts, is the best activity reported to date. The superior catalytic performances of NBCF
Development of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts with reduced precious metal content while enhancing catalytic performance has been of pivotal importance in cost‐effective design of acid polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolyzers. Hollow multimetallic nanostructures with well‐defined facets are ideally suited for saving the usage of expensive precious metals as well as boosting catalytic performances; however, Ir‐based hollow nanocatalysts have rarely been reported. Here, a very si
Two-dimensional (2-D) ordered mesoporous silicas were synthesized following the literature synthesis procedures using two different silica sources (tetraethyl orthosilicate and sodium silicate) and poly(ethylene oxide)−poly(propylene oxide)−poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer template under acidic and neutral synthesis conditions. The resultant SBA-15 and MSU−H silicas exhibited highly ordered mesoporous structures and pore sizes in the range from 7.5 to 10 nm. The silicas prepared under aci
