15There has been continuing debate about the superiority of cruciate-retaining (CR) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) versus posterior-stabilized (PS) TKA for obtaining knee joint stability with functional improvement. Many surgeons tend to select the type of prosthesis on the basis of their own training and experience. However, the selection must be based on a great store of knowledge rather than on the surgeon's preconceptions or preferences. CR TKA may not be feasible in certain settings: posterior
Computer-assisted navigation is used to improve the accuracy and precision of correction angles during high tibial osteotomy. Most studies have reported that this technique reduces the outliers of coronal alignment and unintended changes in the tibial posterior slope angle. However, more sophisticated studies are necessary to determine whether the technique will improve the clinical results and long-term survival rates. Knowledge of the navigation technology, surgical techniques and potential pi
Clinical results of high tibial osteotomy (HTO) deteriorate over time despite the initial satisfactory results. Several knees may require a conversion to total knee arthroplasty (TKA) because of failure such as the progression of degenerative osteoarthritis and the loss of the correction angle. It is important to know the long-term survival rate and common reason of failure in HTO to inform patients of postoperative expectations before surgery and to prevent surgical errors during surgery. In ad
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the survival of microfractures in patients with degenerative osteoarthritic knees and to analyze the factors affecting length of time before total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is performed. METHODS: This study reviewed 134 knees in 124 patients in whom microfracture was performed and for whom a minimum of 10 years of follow-up data were available. Mean follow-up was 11.2 years. The survival rate was evaluated. Failure was defined as the need for TKA. Ano
PURPOSE: Limb length changes were evaluated after closed- and open-wedge high tibial osteotomies (HTOs) using computer-assisted surgery. METHODS: A total of 78 closed- and 30 open-wedge HTOs were performed. The changes in limb length were evaluated on a navigation system and radiographs. The correction angle was defined as the difference between the pre and postoperative mechanical axis on the navigation system. The change in limb length with respect to the correction angle was analyzed. RESULTS
INTRODUCTION: Although total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in haemophilic arthropathy can reduce severe joint pain and improve functional disability, it is technically demanding. AIM: To evaluate mid-term outcomes and complications of TKA in haemophilic arthropathy. METHODS: This study retrospectively reviewed 131 consecutive primary TKAs in a single institute. The mean age was 41.0 years old, and the mean follow-up period was 6.8 years. Clinical and radiographic results were evaluated. Complications
PURPOSE: Long-term clinical and radiographic results and survival rates were compared between closed-wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTOs) and fixed-bearing unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) in patients with similar demographics. METHODS: Sixty HTOs and 50 UKAs completed between 1992 and 1998 were retrospectively reviewed. There were no significant differences in pre-operative demographics. The mean follow-up period was 10.7 ± 5.7 years for HTO and 12.0 ± 7.1 years for UKA (n.s.). The Knee S
BACKGROUND: There have been little data concerning serial changes in the joint space width (JSW) and joint line convergence angle over the course of follow-up periods after closed-wedge high tibial osteotomy (CWHTO). PURPOSE: To evaluate serial changes in the JSW and joint line convergence angle after CWHTO. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: A total of 100 computer-assisted CWHTOs with a minimum follow-up period of 3 years (mean, 4.4 years) were analyzed. Clinically, the
Noise in the knee joint is a common symptom that often leads to outpatient clinic visits. However, there have been no previous review articles regarding noise around the knee despite its high prevalence. We will review the noise characteristics according to sound nature and onset as well as factors for differentiation between physiological and pathological noises. In addition, we will describe causes of the physiological and pathological noises and management of noise in the knee. An appropriate
PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to compare clinical results after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) using the Attune and PFC Sigma knee designs and to investigate whether the use of the Attune prosthesis increased the risk of patellar injury in Asian patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundred knees that underwent TKA using Attune (group A) were compared to 300 knees that underwent TKA using PFC Sigma (group B). The Knee Society Knee Score (KS) and Function Score (FS), and range of motio
