15Human plasma is the most clinically valuable specimen, containing not only a dynamic concentration range of protein components, but also several groups of high-abundance proteins that seriously interfere with the detection of low-abundance potential biomarker proteins. To establish a high-throughput method for efficient depletion of high-abundance proteins and subsequent fractionation, prior to molecular analysis of proteins, we explored how coupled immunoaffinity columns, commercially available
On April 26, 2012, the Korea National Institute of Health officially held the opening ceremony of newly dedicated biobank building, 'NationalBiobank of Korea'. The stocked biospecimens and related information have been distributed for medical and public health researches. The Korea Biobank Project, which was initiated in 2008, constructed the Korea Biobank Network consisting of the National Biobank of Korea (NBK) with 17 regional biobanks in Korea. As of December 2011, a total of 525,416 biospec
We describe an integrated proteome database, termed Yonsei Proteome Research Center Proteome Database (YPRC-PDB) which can store, retrieve and analyze various information including two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) images and associated spot information that were obtained during studies of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). YPRC-PDB is also designed to perform as a laboratory information management system that manages sample information, clinical background, conditions of both sample preparati
The excitability of smooth muscles is regulated, in part, by background K+ conductances that determine resting membrane potential. However, the K+ conductances so far described in gastrointestinal (GI) muscles are not sufficient to explain the negative resting potentials of these cells. Here we describe expression of two-pore K+ channels of the TASK family in murine small and large intestinal muscles. TASK-2, cloned from murine intestinal muscles, resulted in a pH-sensitive, time-dependent, non-
Human plasma is regarded the most complex and well-known clinical specimen that can be easily obtained; alterations in the levels of plasma proteins or their corresponding enzyme activities may reflect either a healthy or a diseased state. Given that there is no defined genomic information as to the intact protein components in plasma, protein profiling could be the first step toward its molecular characterization. Several problems exist in the analysis of plasma proteins, however. For example,
The fact that administration of tamoxifen (Tam) to humans and laboratory animals (e.g., rats and monkeys) results in both a drastic reduction in cholesterol and a marked accumulation of certain sterol intermediates in their serum led us to undertake more direct biochemical studies on the mechanism of Tam's inhibitory action on the cholesterogenic enzymes. Of the five rat hepatic lanosterol-converting enzymes examined, the enzyme most sensitive to inhibition by Tam was sterol delta 8-isomerase (d

An effect-site concentration of remifentanil of 2 ng/mL provides excellent conditions for insertion of the CobraPLA on the first attempt with minimal hemodynamic perturbations and a shorter duration of apnea.
Objective Insertion of a nasogastric tube (NGT) in patients who have been intubated with an endotracheal tube while under general anesthesia can cause difficulties and lead to complications, including hemorrhage. A visualization-aided modality was recently used to facilitate NGT insertion. Some studies have focused on the role of modified Magill forceps, which have angles similar to those of the GlideScope blade (Verathon, Bothell, WA, USA). Methods Seventy patients were divided into a control g
Background: Nausea, vomiting are among the most common postoperative complaints. We compared the effects of dexamethasone with or without propofol to the effects of conventional regimen consisting of enflurane-N2O in the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting. Methods : Eighty healthy children, aged 3∼14 yr, undergoing elective tonsillectomy were allocated randomly to receive either 67% nitrous oxide and 1.5∼2.0% enflurane or 67% nitrous oxide and propofol infusion 6∼10 mg/kg/hr for mai

Objective: For short-duration surgery, propofol and remifentanil are the drugs of choice for intubation without neuromuscular blockade. The Shikani Optical Stylet (SOS) is a novel semi-rigid type fiberoptic laryngoscope. In this study, we determined the clinically required effect-site concentration of remifentanil for intubation using SOS without neuromuscular blockade depending on propofol effect-site concentration. Methods: We enrolled patients scheduled for elective surgery with general anest
