The creation of electric wind due to the electrohydrodynamic force

SJR Q1Nature CommunicationsOA

Understanding the interactions between ionized matter and neutral particles is a prerequisite for discovering their impact on natural phenomena. One such phenomenon is the electric wind, which supposedly occurs due to the charged particle-neutral coupling in systems of weakly ionized gases, but this mechanism remains unclear. Here, we report direct evidence that electric wind is caused by an electrohydrodynamic force generated by the charged particle drag as a result of the momentum transfer fro

Electron density and temperature measurement by continuum radiation emitted from weakly ionized atmospheric pressure plasmas
Sanghoo Park, Wonho Choe, Se Youn Moon, Jaeyoung Park
SJR Q1Applied Physics LettersOA

The electron-atom neutral bremsstrahlung continuum radiation emitted from weakly ionized plasmas is investigated for electron density and temperature diagnostics. The continuum spectrum in 450–1000 nm emitted from the argon atmospheric pressure plasma is found to be in excellent agreement with the neutral bremsstrahlung formula with the electron-atom momentum transfer cross-section given by Popović. In 280–450 nm, however, a large discrepancy between the measured and the neutral bremsstrahlung e

SJR Q1Advances in Physics XOA

Weakly ionized plasmas at or near 1 atm pressure, or atmospheric-pressure plasmas, have received increasing attention due to their scientific significance and potential for use in a variety of applications, particularly for medicine, agriculture, and food. However, there is a large imbalance between scientific research on plasma physics and applications, which is partly due to the considerable differences in the characteristics of these plasmas compared with those of low-pressure plasmas. This d

Continuum emission-based electron diagnostics for atmospheric pressure plasmas and characteristics of nanosecond-pulsed argon plasma jets

SJR Q2Plasma Sources Science and Technology

Electron diagnostics based on electron–neutral atom (e–a) bremsstrahlung in the UV and visible range emitted from atmospheric pressure plasmas is presented. Since the spectral emissivity of the e–a bremsstrahlung is determined by electron density (ne) and mean electron temperature (Te) representing the Maxwellian electron energy distribution, their diagnostics is possible. As an example, emission spectra measured from capacitive discharges are presented, which show good agreement with the theore

Nonheating ozone suppression in pulsed air discharges: role of pulse duration and repetition rate

SJR Q1Journal of Physics D Applied PhysicsOA

Abstract Facilitating the separate production of ozone (O 3 ) and nitrogen oxides (NO x ) in air discharges without a thermal process is of most merit in diversifying plasma technology; in particular, it is a primary requirement in certain cold, heat-sensitive plasma applications. Here, we propose a new method of nonheating ozone suppression in air discharges. The present work demonstrates that controlling the plasma chemical kinetics by adjusting the duration (width) and/or repetition frequency

Nitric and nitrous acid formation in plasma-treated water: Decisive role of nitrogen oxides (NO=1–3)

SJR Q1ChemosphereOA

Nitrogen fixation using low-temperature plasma, particularly in relation to plasma-treated water (PTW) and its chemical and physical properties, has received a renewed research focus. Dissolving highly concentrated nitrogen oxides (NOx = 1-3) generated by air discharge into water results in the formation of two aqueous oxiacids (nitrous and nitric acids; HNOy = 2,3) and their conjugates (nitrate and nitrite ions; NOy-). Nonlinear formation of these spe

Multiple (eight) plasma bullets in helium atmospheric pressure plasma jet and the role of nitrogen
Sanghoo Park, Se Youn Moon, Wonho Choe
SJR Q1Applied Physics Letters

As many as eight multiple plasma bullets produced at atmospheric pressure were observed in one voltage period in a capillary helium dielectric barrier plasma jet. We found that the number of the bullets strongly depends on the nitrogen fraction added to the helium supply gas. Using optical emission spectroscopy and ionization rate calculation, this study demonstrates that nitrogen gas plays an important role in the generation and dynamics of multiple plasma bullets through Penning ionization of

Three-dimensional tomographically reconstructed optical emission profiles of Hall thruster plasmas

SJR Q2Plasma Sources Science and Technology

Abstract A diagnostic system was developed for spectrally resolved, three-dimensional tomographic reconstruction of Hall thruster plasmas, and local intensity profiles of Xe I and Xe II emissions were reconstructed. In this diagnostic system, 28 virtual cameras were generated using a single, fixed charge-coupled device camera by rotating the Hall thruster to form a sufficient number of lines of sight. The Phillips–Tikhonov regularization algorithm was used to reconstruct local emission profiles

Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) shell, an abundant by-product of peanut production, contains a complex combination of organic compounds, including flavonoids. Changes in the total phenolic content, flavonoid content, antioxidant capacities, and skin aging-related enzyme (tyrosinase, elastase, and collagenase)-inhibitory activities of peanut shell were investigated after treatment in pressure swing reactors under controlled gas conditions using surface dielectric barrier discharge with different pla

SJR Q1MoleculesOA

To the best of our knowledge, few studies have utilized cold plasma to improve soybean protein extraction yield and the functional properties of soybean protein. In this study, we aimed to assess the benefits of remote plasma treatments on soybean with respect to the utilization of soybean protein. This study involved two different sample forms (whole and crushed beans), two different plasma chemistry modes (ozone and nitrogen oxides [NOx = NO + NO2]), and a novel pressure-swing reactor.
