Vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) consists of two different etiologic categories: human papilloma virus (HPV)-associated (HPV (+)) and HPV-non-associated (HPV (−)). There have been no genome-wide studies on the genetic alterations of vulvar SCCs or on the differences between HPV (+) and HPV (−) vulvar SCCs. In this study, we performed whole-exome sequencing and copy number profiling of 6 HPV (+) and 9 HPV (−) vulvar SCCs and found known mutations (TP53, CDKN2A and HRAS) and copy number altera

Oncocytic adrenocortical carcinomas: A pathological and immunohistochemical study of four cases in comparison with conventional adrenocortical carcinomas
Sang Yong Song, Sunhoo Park, Seong Rim Kim, Yeon‐Lim Suh
SJR Q1Pathology International

Clinicopathological features of four cases of oncocytic adrenocortical carcinomas were studied. All tumors were large, circumscribed tumors with average size and weight of 11.5 cm and 586 g, respectively. The cut surfaces were yellow or brown and tan with areas of hemorrhage, necrosis, fibrosis, myxoid and cystic change. The tumor cells were exclusively oncocytic with a diffuse or compact and solid arrangement. Nuclear atypia was identified but mitosis was rare. Capsular invasion was identified

SJR Q1Pathology International

Maspin, a member of the serpin family of protease inhibitors, is known to be a tumor suppressor. The relationship between its expression and biological significance in various human cancers has not been elucidated. We studied maspin expression in 30 cases of human gastric adenocarcinoma using immunohistochemistry and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Twenty-seven cases (90%) of gastric adenocarcinoma, regardless of histological type, and all the cases of gastric epithelial cells w

Bronchogenic cyst of the stomach masquerading as benign stromal tumor

SJR Q1Pathology InternationalOA

Gastric bronchogenic cyst is an extremely rare lesion. A 62-year-old Korean woman presented with an incidentally found perigastric nodule. An abdominal ultrasonogram and computed tomography showed a 1.5 cm solid, homogeneous, low-density nodule in the hepatogastric ligament near the gastric lesser curvature. At the time of surgery, a soft 1.7 cm nodule was found in the lesser curvature side just below the gastroesophageal junction, and a gelatinous mass was protruded from the nodule during the r

BACKGROUND: Serrated adenoma is a discrete colorectal epithelial neoplastic lesion that can evolve into colorectal cancer. However, the degree of malignant potential has not been firmly established as yet. The purpose of the present paper was to compare the malignant potential and clinicopathological features between serrated and traditional adenomas. METHODS: A total of 124 serrated adenomas from 116 patients were assessed, and 419 traditional adenomas from 200 were randomly selected. The combi

Mediastinal Germ Cell Tumor Associated with Histiocytic Sarcoma of Spleen: Case Report of an Unusual Association
Sang Yong Song, Young Hyeh Ko, Geunghwan Ahn
SJR Q2International Journal of Surgical Pathology

We present an unusual association of mediastinal germ cell tumor containing seminoma and angiosarcoma components and splenic histiocytic sarcoma. A 15-year-old boy presented with chest pain. Histopathologically, an anterior mediastinal mass contained typical seminoma, immature teratoma, embryonal carcinoma, angiosarcoma, yolk sac tumor, and polyembryoma. An abdominal ultrasonogram revealed a huge splenomegaly with multiple ill-defined low echogenic nodules, 1 month after the second cycle of chem

SJR Q3Diagnostic Cytopathology

Even though p16(INK4a) (p16) immunocytochemistry has proven a useful accessory tool verifying the identification of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) categorized smears, the procedure still has limitations. To date few studies examining the usefulness of p16 immunocytochemistry in atypical squamous cells which cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H), compared with ASC-US in liquid-based cervical smears. Therefore, we examined the correlation of p16 immunocytochemical staining wit

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Maspin is a member of the serpin family of protease inhibitors known to have tumor suppressor activity. However, molecular aspects in carcinogenesis and progression of gastric cancer remain largely unclear. Previously we reported for the first time that maspin is induced in the course of gastric carcinogenesis. In the present study we evaluated maspin induction in gastric adenocarcinoma in relation to a number of clinicopathologic feature. METHODOLOGY: Maspin expression was exam

Mutational analysis of mononucleotide repeats in dual specificity tyrosine phosphatase genes in gastric and colon carcinomas with microsatellite instability

SJR Q1ApmisOA

Coordinated protein phosphorylation and dephosphorylation are crucial in the regulation of cell signaling, and disruption of the coordination is known to play important roles in cancer development. Recent reports revealed that classical protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP)-encoded genes are somatically mutated in human colorectal cancer. However, data on dual specificity phosphatase (DPTP) gene mutations in human cancers are lacking. By analyzing a public genomic database, we found that five DPTP
