Biomarkers of insulin sensitivity and insulin resistance: Past, present and future
Se Eun Park, Cheol‐Young Park, Gary Sweeney
SJR Q1Critical Reviews in Clinical Laboratory Sciences

Insulin resistance in insulin target tissues including liver, skeletal muscle and adipose tissue is an early step in the progression towards type 2 diabetes. Accurate diagnostic parameters reflective of insulin resistance are essential. Longstanding tests for fasting blood glucose and HbA1c are useful and although the hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp remains a "gold standard" for accurately determining insulin resistance, it cannot be implemented on a routine basis. The study of adipokines, and

The effects of exendin-4 on Sirt1 expression as a mechanism of reducing fatty liver have not been previously reported. Therefore, we investigated whether the beneficial effects of exendin-4 treatment on fatty liver are mediated via Sirt1 in high-fat (HF) diet-induced obese C57BL/6J mice and related cell culture models. Exendin-4 treatment decreased body weight, serum free fatty acid (FA), and triglyceride levels in HF-induced obese C57BL/6J mice. Histological analysis showed that exendin-4 rever

SJR Q1Diabetes CareOA

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether there is a difference in the association between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and incident diabetes based on the presence of impaired fasting glucose. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 7,849 individuals (5,409 men and 2,440 women) without diabetes, who underwent comprehensive health check-ups annually for 5 years, were categorized into four groups by the presence of impaired fasting glucose and NAFLD at baseline. The association between NAFLD and

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

The Triglyceride Glucose Index (TyG index) is considered a surrogate marker of insulin resistance. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the TyG index has a predictive role in identifying individuals with a high risk of incident diabetes and to compare it with other indicators of metabolic health. A total 2900 non-diabetic adults who attended five consecutive annual health check-ups at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital was divided into four subgroups using three methods: (1) baseline TyG index;

Recent studies suggest an association of vitamin D with obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. We analyzed the association of serum vitamin D level assessed by 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 {25(OH)D3 } with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in apparently healthy men. We performed a cross-sectional study of 6,567 Korean men who participated in a health screening program, evaluating the association of serum 25(OH)D3 levels with the risk of NAFLD assessed by abdominal ultrasonogram. CONTEXT: Traditional lipid measures are known to be associated with incident type 2 diabetes. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to assess the independent association between lipid profiles and the development of type 2 diabetes in nondiabetic Korean subjects over a 4-yr period. DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 5577 Koreans without diabetes who underwent consecutive comprehensive health check-ups annually for 5 yr were enrolled. We measured concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), ap

BACKGRUOUND: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, management, and comorbidities of diabetes mellitus among Korean adults. METHODS: Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2019-2022) were analyzed to assess the prevalence, treatment, risk factors, and comorbidities of diabetes. Comparisons between young and older adults with diabetes were emphasized. RESULTS: Among Korean adults aged ≥30 years, the prevalence of diabetes is 15.5% during 2021-2022. Of these

High urinary ACE2 concentrations are associated with severity of glucose intolerance and microalbuminuria

SJR Q1European Journal of Endocrinology

OBJECTIVE: Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) plays an important role in glucose metabolism and renal function. However, the relationship between ACE2 and hyperglycemia or microalbuminuria has not been established in humans. We investigated whether urinary ACE2 levels are associated with abnormal glucose homeostasis and urinary albumin excretion. METHODS: We developed an ELISA for quantifying ACE2 in urine. The ELISA was used to measure urinary ACE2 levels in 621 subjects with: normal glucos

SJR Q1European Journal of EndocrinologyOA

OBJECTIVE: Serum concentrations of retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) are elevated in type 2 diabetes and associated with the severity of insulin resistance; however, there are few data about the relationship between urinary RBP4 levels and metabolic parameters. We assessed urinary RBP4 as a new biomarker by establishing its relationship with clinical parameters associated with insulin resistance and urinary albumin excretion. DESIGN AND METHODS: We measured RBP4 in the serum and urine of 689 subj

Background: Although autonomic imbalance is associated with an increased risk for metabolic disease, its effects on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate whether autonomic dysfunction predicts the risk for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Methods: A total of 33,899 participants without NAFLD who underwent health screening programs between 2011 and 2018 were enrolled. NAFLD was identified by ultrasonography. Autonomic activity was estimated using
