15Forthcoming flexible/wearable electronic devices with shape diversity and mobile usability garner a great deal of attention as an innovative technology to bring unprecedented changes in our daily lives. From the power source point of view, conventional rechargeable batteries (one representative example is a lithium-ion battery) with fixed shapes and sizes have intrinsic limitations in fulfilling design/performance requirements for the flexible/wearable electronics. Here, as a facile and efficien
Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs) are currently in clinical trials partly due to their potent anti-angiogenic effects. However, the detailed mechanism of their action is unclear. Here, we observed that several HDACIs (TSA, SB, Apicidin, and VPA) dramatically decreased HIF-1alpha protein level and transcriptional activity of HIF-1 in human and mouse tumor cell lines. Furthermore, class I HDACs, HDAC1 and 3 enhanced HIF-1alpha stability and HIF-1 transactivation function in hypoxic condition
We demonstrate mechanically compliant and lithium dendrite growth-suppressing composite polymer electrolytes for use in flexible lithium-ion batteries. This new composite polymer electrolyte (referred to as “CPE”) is fabricated via an exquisite combination of UV (ultraviolet)-cured ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate macromer (serving as a mechanical framework) and Al2O3 nanoparticles (as a functional filler) in the presence of a high boiling point liquid electrolyte. A distinctive struct
Objectives: Pathogenic mutations in developmental and epileptic encephalopathy (DEE) are increasingly being discovered. However, little has been known about effective targeted treatments for this rare disorder. Here, we assessed the efficacy of ketogenic diet (KD) according to the genes responsible for DEE. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the data from 333 patients who underwent a targeted next-generation sequencing panel for DEE, 155 of whom had tried KD. Patients showing ≥90% seizure red
A solid-state electrolyte with reliable electrochemical performance, mechanical robustness and safety features is strongly pursued to facilitate the progress of flexible batteries. Here, we demonstrate a shape-deformable and thermally stable plastic crystal composite polymer electrolyte (denoted as “PC-CPE”) as a new class of solid-state electrolyte to achieve this challenging goal. The PC-CPE is composed of UV (ultraviolet)-cured ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate (ETPTA) macromer/close
Chlorophyll, essential for photosynthesis, is composed of a chlorin ring and a geranylgeranyl diphosphate (GGPP)-derived isoprenoid, which are generated by the tetrapyrrole and methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) biosynthesis pathways, respectively. Although a functional MEP pathway is essential for plant viability, the underlying basis of the requirement has been unclear. We hypothesized that MEP pathway inhibition is lethal because a reduction in GGPP availability results in a stoichiometric imba
The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of thyroid dysfunction during valproic acid (VPA) therapy in children and adolescents with epilepsy. The serum levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine, and triiodothyronine were evaluated in 61 children with epilepsy who received VPA monotherapy for more than 6 months and in 144 controls. We analyzed the effect of age, seizure type, duration of VPA treatment, dose of VPA, and serum level of VPA on thyroid function. The incid
Most anti-epileptic drug serum concentrations remained stable during the KD and other related dietary therapies except those of valproic acid. Therefore, serum concentrations of valproic acid should be monitored when the KD and other dietary therapies are concomitantly administered.
The ketogenic diet (KD) is an effective treatment option for intractable epilepsy. Here, we reviewed the last 10 years of our experience with the KD and characterized its use in patients under 3 years of age. Medical records of all patients under the age of 3 years who were treated with the ketogenic diet from April 2004 to June 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. One hundred and nine patients with drug-resistant epilepsy were included. The mean age at the initiation of the KD was 1.4 ± 0.8 year
Palmitate concentrations in type 2 diabetic patients are higher than in healthy subjects. The prolonged elevation of plasma palmitate levels induces oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in neuronal cells. In this study, we examined the role of mdivi-1, a selective inhibitor of mitochondrial fission protein dynamin-regulated protein 1 (Drp1), on the survival of cultured hippocampal neural stem cells (NSCs) exposed to high palmitate. Treatment of hippocampal NSCs with mdivi-1 attenuated
Abstract A practical and efficient synthesis of various 1,2,5‐tricarbonyl compounds is described. The synthesis has been carried out by a conjugate addition of methyl cyanoacetate to the β‐position of α,β‐unsaturated carbonyl compounds and a subsequent copper(I) iodide‐catalyzed aerobic oxidation. In addition, various α‐aryl‐ and α‐alkyl‐α‐keto esters have been synthesized using a similar approach.
