SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Lymphedema is a serious long-term complication in breast cancer patients post-surgery; however, the influence of multimodal therapy on its occurrence remains unclear. METHODS: We retrospectively collected treatment-related data from 5549 breast cancer patients who underwent surgery between 2007 and 2
With increasing clinical use, radiotherapy (RT) has been considered reliable and effective method for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment, depending on extent of disease and patient characteristics. RT for HCC can improve therapeutic outcomes through excellent local control, downstaging, conversion from unresectable to resectable status, and treatments of unresectable HCCs with vessel invasion or multiple intrahepatic metastases. In addition, further development of modern RT technologies, i
We assessed the impact of including peritumoral edema in radiotherapy volumes on recurrence patterns among glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) patients treated with standard chemoradiotherapy (CRT). We analyzed 167 patients with histologically confirmed GBM who received temozolomide (TMZ)-based CRT between May 2006 and November 2012. The study cohort was divided into edema (+) (n = 130) and edema (-) (n = 37) groups, according to whether the entire peritumoral edema was included. At a median follow-up
BACKGROUND: To identify prognostic factors and define the optimal management of patients with supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (sPNETs), we investigated treatment outcomes and explored the prognostic value of specific molecular markers. METHODS: A total of 47 consecutive patients with pathologically confirmed sPNETs between May 1985 and June 2012 were included. Immunohistochemical analysis of LIN28, OLIG2, and Rad51 expression was performed and correlated with clinical outcome. RE
Although there have been many attempts to increase the therapeutic ratio of radiotherapy for gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma (MALToma), only a few planning studies have reported the efficacy of the modern radiotherapy technique till date. Therefore, we performed the dosimetric comparison among 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) plans, using deep-inspiration breath hold (DIBH) or free-breathing (FB) techniques, to determine
Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is a form of radiotherapy that delivers high doses of irradiation with high precision in a small number of fractions. However, it has not frequently been performed for the liver due to the risk of radiation-induced liver toxicity. Furthermore, liver SBRT is cumbersome because it requires accurate patient repositioning, target localization, control of breathing-related motion, and confers a toxicity risk to the small bowel. Recently, with the advancement of m
PURPOSE: Although locally invasive or recurrent fibromatosis is primarily treated with surgery, radiotherapy (RT) produces local control for recurrent/unresectable tumors or those with positive surgical margins. Herein, we describe our updated institutional experience with RT to treat fibromatosis. METHODS: Forty-seven patients with fibromatosis received RT between 1990 and 2015, and were followed for ≥12 months. Eight patients received RT for gross tumors, and 39 received postoperative RT after
OBJECTIVES: Triple-negative breast cancers (TNBC) is an aggressive disease and often associated with early distant metastases, which negate the role of adjuvant radiotherapy. We studied the clinical utility of programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) and other available factors in predicting clinical outcome in TNBC. METHODS: Of the 539 patients with newly diagnosed TNBC between 2004 and 2011, we analyzed 117 patients who had both tumor samples which PD-L1 protein expression could be evaluated using im
Moderate safety and acceptable toxicity was found after re-RT using tight margins, sufficient radiation dose, and daily image guidance. Encouraging local control and survival were obtained, similar to historical data using 1-2 cm margins.
PURPOSE: Although postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) is demonstrably effective in local control of head and neck adenoid cystic carcinoma (HNACC), its application is controversial and the subset of patients who would benefit most from PORT is unknown. Herein, we analyzed the data of HNACC patients to clarify the role of PORT. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 187 patients with nonmetastatic HNACC who underwent surgical resection between 2005 and 2019. The study endpoints were locoregional fail
