15Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is an autosomal recessive ciliopathy with multisystem involvement. So far, 18 BBS genes have been identified and the majority of them are essential for the function of BBSome, a protein complex involved in transporting membrane proteins into and from cilia. Yet defects in the identified genes cannot account for all the BBS cases. The genetic heterogeneity of this disease poses significant challenge to the identification of additional BBS genes. In this study, we coupl
Sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping has been widely used to predict the metastatic spread of primary tumor to regional lymph nodes in clinical practice. In this research, a new near-infrared (NIR)-emitting polymer nanogel (NIR-PNG) having a hydrodynamic diameter of about 30 nm, which is optimal for lymph node uptake, was developed. The NIR-emitting polymer nanoprobes were designed and synthesized by conjugating IRDye800 organic dye to biodegradable pullulan-cholesterol polymer nanogels. The NIR-PN
Importance: Patients undergoing proximal gastrectomy (PG) with double-tract reconstruction (DTR) have been reported to have an incidence of reflux esophagitis that is as low as that observed after total gastrectomy (TG). It is unclear whether PG has an advantage over TG for the treatment of patients with upper early gastric cancer (GC). Objective: To evaluate the effect of laparoscopic PG with DTR (LPG-DTR) vs laparoscopic TG (LTG) on levels of hemoglobin and vitamin B12 supplementation required
Since the completion of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae genome sequencing project in 1996, the genomes of over 80 fungal species have been sequenced or are currently being sequenced. Resulting data provide opportunities for studying and comparing fungal biology and evolution at the genome level. To support such studies, the Comparative Fungal Genomics Platform (CFGP; http://cfgp.snu.ac.kr), a web-based multifunctional informatics workbench, was developed. The CFGP comprises three layers, including
Gastrointestinal stromal tumor is the most common mesenchymal tumor in the gastrointestinal tract and is most frequently developed in the stomach in the form of submucosal tumor. The incidence of gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor is estimated to be as high as 25% of the population when all small and asymptomatic tumors are included. Because gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor is not completely distinguished from other submucosal tumors, a surgical excisional biopsy is recommended for tum

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy (LADG) in early gastric cancer (EGC) with special interest in a learning curve effect. METHODS: The clinical outcomes of EGC patients who underwent LADG (n = 100) and sex-, age- and body mass index- (BMI) matched EGC patients who underwent open distal gastrectomy (ODG; n = 100) were compared retrospectively. In addition, the outcomes between the early (n = 50) and late LADG group (n = 50) were com
Differences in demographics, medical expertise, and patient healthcare resources across countries have led to significant variations in guidelines. In light of these differences, in this review, we aimed to explore and compare the most recent updates to gastric cancer treatment from five guidelines that are available in English. These English-version guidelines, which have been recently published and updated for journal publication, include those published in South Korea in 2024, Japan in 2021,
BACKGROUND: Claudin 18.2 (CLDN18.2) is a promising target for targeted therapies in gastric cancer (GC). This study investigated the prevalence of CLDN18.2 expression in patients with stages II-IV GC or gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) adenocarcinoma and its correlation with clinicopathologic features and other crucial GC biomarkers. METHODS: We enrolled 1000 patients diagnosed with stages II-IV GC after surgical treatment. Immunohistochemistry for CLDN18 (43-14A clone), PD-L1 (22C3 pharmDx), HER
Although gastric cancer is quite common in Korea, the treatment outcome is relatively favorable compared to those in western countries. However, there are currently no Korean multidisciplinary guidelines for gastric cancer. Experts from related societies developed guidelines de novo to meet Korean circumstances and requirements, including 23 recommendation statements for diagnosis (n=9) and treatment (n=14) based on relevant key questions. The quality of the evidence was rated according to the G
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term outcomes of laparoscopic pylorus-preserving gastrectomy (LPPG) with laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (LDG) for early gastric cancer. BACKGROUND: Pylorus-preserving gastrectomy is considered a function-preserving surgery for early gastric cancer. However, there has been no multicenter randomized controlled trial comparing pylorus-preserving gastrectomy with distal gastrectomy until now. METHODS: A multicenter randomized controlled trial (KLASS-04) with 256 pati
