이 글은 대수 교육과정을 개선하려는 여러 움직임 가운데 초등수학을 중심으로 하는 ‘초기대수’(early algebra)에 관한 것이다. 초기대수는 중등학교 대수 교육과 관련해서 발생하는 여러 문제를 초등수학의 재음미를 통해 해결하려는 시도로, 이것은 1980년대 ‘대수적 사고’를 학교대수에서 강조하려는 움직임과 함께 시작한 것이다. 초기대수는 대수를 기호가 아닌 추론 측면에서 논의하는 것으로, 기호 이전에 등장한 대수적 사고와 학생들의 심리적 발달을 고려해서 그 지도 가능성이 제시되고 있다. 이러한 초기대수와 관련된 연구는 1990년대 이후 미국을 비롯해서 네덜란드와 호주 등 각국에서 현재 진행 중에 있다. 한편 이 글은 우리의 초등수학 교과서를 분석하고, 이를 통해 초기대수와의 관련성에 대해 논의하였으며, 대수 교육과정의 개선이 초등수학에서부터 단계적으로 시작될 수 있음을 강조하고 있다.
