15BACKGROUND AND AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of metformin on intestinal inflammation. METHODS: COLO205 cells were pretreated with metformin and stimulated with tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α. Expression of interleukin (IL)-8 was determined by luciferase assay and real-time PCR. Inhibitor of kappaB (IκB) phosphorylation/degradation and adenosine monohosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activity were evaluated by Western blotting. DNA-binding activity of transcription fac
Although fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, is known to demonstrate anti-inflammatory activity, little information is available on the effect of fluoxetine regarding intestinal inflammation. This study investigates the role of fluoxetine in the attenuation of acute murine colitis by suppression of the NF-κB pathway in intestinal epithelial cells (IEC). Fluoxetine significantly inhibited activated NF-κB signals and the upregulated expression of interleukin-8 (IL-8) in COLO 205
Patients with OGIB and negative CE have a potential risk of rebleeding. Therefore, close observation is required and alternative modalities should be considered in suspicious cases.
BACKGROUND/AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of psychosocial problems and their associations with rotating shift work in the development of functional gastrointestinal disorders. METHODS: In this cross-sectional observation study, survey was administered to nurses and nurse assistants in a referral hospital. In addi-tion to demographic questions, subjects were asked to complete the Rome III Questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Rome III Psychosocial Alarm Questi
Crohn's disease (CD) is a relapsing and progressive condition characterized by diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, and hematochezia that results in serious complications such as perforations, fistulas, and abscesses. Various medications, interventions, and surgical treatments have been used to treat CD. The Korean guidelines for CD management were distributed in 2012 and revised in 2017 by the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Research Group of the Korean Association for the Study of Intestina
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Inflammatory bowel diseases is associated with an increased risk for the development of colorectal cancer. However, the mechanism of immune signaling pathways linked to colitis-associated cancer (CAC) has not been fully elucidated. Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) exhibits anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activities. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of TUDCA in the pathogenesis of CAC. METHODS: Colitis-associated cancer was induced in mice using azoxymethane
In January 2008, an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis at a waterpark was reported to the Bundang-gu Public Health Center in Seongnam, Korea. To determine the etiological agent and mode of transmission, a retrospective cohort study was done using structured questionnaires and stool samples from patients who had current gastrointestinal symptoms and three food handlers were tested. A total of 67 (31.0%) students and teachers developed acute gastroenteritis. No food items were associated with an in
Periostin is a matricellular protein that interacts with various integrin molecules on the cell surface. Although periostin is expressed in inflamed colonic mucosa, its role in the regulation of intestinal inflammation remains unclear. We investigated the role of periostin in intestinal inflammation using Postn-deficient (Postn-/-) mice. Intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) were transfected by Postn small interfering RNAs. Periostin expression was determined in colon tissue samples from ulcerative
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) presents with various extraintestinal manifestations. As part of them, various skin diseases are suggested to be related to IBD. We aimed to identify the epidemiology and risk of developing skin manifestations in patients with IBD. We used Korean insurance claims data and selected patients with IBD and age/sex-matched non-IBD subjects between 2013 and 2017 using the diagnosis code and prescription records of IBD-specific medications. The prevalence and risk of co
Our study suggests that the incidence of IBS among patients with culture-proven bacterial gastroenteritis within a community is similar to that reported among Western populations. A large, prospective study is encouraged to confirm our results and to evaluate the influence of the microbial species on the epidemiology of IBS in Asian populations.
This novel animal model could be useful in future study of psychological stress in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease.
