15For successful tracheal reconstruction, tissue-engineered artificial trachea should meet several requirements, such as biocompatible constructs comparable to natural trachea, coverage with ciliated respiratory mucosa, and adequate cartilage remodeling to support a cylindrical structure. Here, we designed an artificial trachea with mechanical properties similar to the native trachea that can enhance the regeneration of tracheal mucosa and cartilage through the optimal combination of a two-layered
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to quantitatively measure the tightness of the goggle strap during the video head impulse test (vHIT) and to identify slippage-induced artifacts according to tightness. We aimed to elucidate the mechanism of faulty gain caused by goggle slippage and explain the typical artifacts associated with it. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: An endotracheal tube cuff manometer was coupled to the EyeSeeCam vHIT system (Interacoustics, Assens, Denmark) to monitor strap tightness. T
BACKGROUND: This study investigated the effects of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) sheet transplantation on healing of chemically induced oral ulceration in a rabbit animal model. METHODS: Oral mucosal ulcers were induced by topical application of filter paper soaked with 70% acetic acid to the anterior gingiva and buccal mucosa of 12 New Zealand white rabbits. The animals were randomly assigned to two groups: with (treatment group, n = 6) or without (control group, n = 6) cell sheets applied to ulc
There is increasing demand for reconstruction of glottal insufficiency. Several injection materials have been examined for this purpose, but all had limitations, such as poor long-term durability, migration from the injection site, inflammation, granuloma formation, and interference with vocal fold vibration due to viscoelastic mismatch. Here, we developed a novel injection material, consisting of polycaprolactone (PCL) microspheres, which exhibits better viscoelasticity than conventional materi
Despite recent developments in the tracheal tissue engineering field, the creation of a patient specific substitute possessing both appropriate mechanical and biointerfacial properties remains challenging. Most tracheal replacement therapies fail due to restenosis at the anastomosis site. In this study, we designed a robust, biodegradable, 3D tubular scaffold by combining electrospinning (ELSP) and 3D (three-dimensional) printing techniques for use in transplantation therapy. After that, we load
Loss of voice after vocal fold resection due to laryngeal cancer is a significant problem resulting in a low quality of life. Although there were many attempts to achieve a functional restoration of voice, challenges to regenerate vocal fold still remain due to its unique tissue mechanical characteristics such as pliability that produces phonation via vibration. In this study, we developed a mechanically compliant interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogel based on polyacrylamide (PAAM) and

Off-the-shelf use of APM for tracheal reconstruction seems to be a promising strategy in the treatment of tracheal defects.
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to explore a novel strategy to restore vocal gap by using polycaprolactone (PCL) spheres with thermosensitive Pluronic F127 in a paralyzed rabbit vocal fold. STUDY DESIGN: In vivo study using a rabbit model. METHODS: The PCL spheres were fabricated by an isolated particle-melting method. The PCL spheres/Pluronic F127 gel mixture was prepared by a simple mixture of PCL and Pluronic F127 solution. We used 33 New Zealand white rabbits, which were
