15The prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is high in the oropharyngeal mucosal regions, of which the tonsil is the most commonly affected. There may be a link between HPV and the pathogenesis of tonsillar cancer (TC), because of common anatomical characteristics between cervical and tonsillar cancer. We aimed to clarify whether HPV directly affects the oncogenesis and biologic behavior of TC by making a comparison between infection prevalence, physical status and viral loading numbe
BACKGROUND: We performed transoral robotic surgery (TORS) or conventional surgery via a transoral or mandibulotomy approach in patients with tonsillar cancer and prospectively analyzed the oncologic outcomes and functional recovery of the 3 groups. METHODS: Between May 2008 and October 2011, 57 patients were enrolled in this prospective study. RESULTS: Although there was no significant difference in the survival rate of the TORS group (100%) and the conventional surgery group (96.7%), a higher r
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In oral tongue cancer, the degree of tumor invasion has a significant effect on the prognosis. We hypothesized that the destruction of extracellular matrix and neovascularization are related to tumor infiltration mechanism. By studying the tissues of early stage oral tongue cancer patients, we are intending to clarify the invasion-related factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To demonstrate the invasion process in early T-stage oral tongue cancer, the expressions of extracel
PPS surgery via a transoral approach using a robotic surgical system is technically feasible and secures a better cosmetic outcome than the transcervical, transparotid, or transmandibular approach. This new surgical method is safe and effective for benign diseases of the PPS.
In the TORS and radical surgery groups, the 3-year overall survival rate was 85% and 78%, respectively, and disease-free survival was 81% and 76%, respectively. Significant differences were not observed in the overall survival and disease-free survival rates. As regards postoperative functional recovery, the TORS group showed statistically better results for decannulation, swallowing, and hospitalization compared with the radical surgery group. On the University of Washington (UW)-QOL, the TORS
OBJECTIVE: Da Vinci single port (SP) has been recently approved for transoral robotic surgery (TORS). Its characteristics make it particularly feasible for laryngeal and hypopharyngeal surgery. We report our experience comparing intra- and postoperative outcomes, technical advantages, and shortcomings of transoral laryngeal and hypopharyngeal resections performed with the da Vinci SP and the da Vinci Si/Xi systems. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective database review. SETTING: Single academic tertiary ca
