STUDY OBJECTIVES: To investigate differences in brain gray matter concentrations or volumes in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA) and healthy volunteers. DESIGNS: Optimized voxel-based morphometry, an automated processing technique for MRI, was used to characterize structural differences in gray matter in newly diagnosed male patients. SETTING: University hospital. PATIENTS AND PARTICIPANTS: The study consisted of 36 male OSA and 31 non-apneic male healthy volunteers matched fo

Hippocampal Substructural Vulnerability to Sleep Disturbance and Cognitive Impairment in Patients with Chronic Primary Insomnia: Magnetic Resonance Imaging Morphometry

SJR Q1SLEEPOA

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Despite compelling evidence from animal studies indicating hippocampal subfield-specific vulnerability to poor sleep quality and related cognitive impairment, there have been no human magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies investigating the relationship between hippocampal subfield volume and sleep disturbance. Our aim was to investigate the pattern of volume changes across hippocampal subfields in patients with primary insomnia relative to controls. DESIGN: Pointwise morphom

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To investigate differences in cortical thickness in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome and healthy controls. DESIGN: Cortical thickness was measured using a three-dimensional surface-based method that enabled more accurate measurement in deep sulci and localized regional mapping. SETTING: University hospital. PATIENTS: Thirty-eight male patients with severe OSA (mean apnea-hypopnea index > 30/h) and 36 age-matched male healthy controls were enrolled. INTERVENT

OBJECTIVES: High-frequency oscillations (HFOs) represent a novel electrophysiologic marker of endogenous epileptogenicity. Clinically, this propensity can be utilized to more accurately delineate the resection margin before epilepsy surgery. Currently, prospective application of HFOs is limited because of a lack of an exact quantitative measure to reliably identify HFO-generating areas necessary to include in the resection. Here, we evaluated the potential of a patient-individualized approach of

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To investigate changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). DESIGN: We compared the 99mTc-ethylcysteinate dimer (ECD) single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images of patients with OSAHS with those of age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers. SETTING: University hospital. PATIENTS AND PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-seven patients with severe OSAHS and 27 healthy volunteers underwent 99mTc-ECD brain SPECT stu

Glucose hypometabolism of hypothalamus and thalamus in narcolepsy

SJR Q1Annals of Neurology

It has been hypothesized that hypothalamus is involved in narcolepsy. The relative difference between cerebral glucose metabolism of 24 narcoleptic patients and 24 normal controls was studied using 18F-fluorodeoxy glucose positron emission tomography. Patients with narcolepsy showed significantly reduced cerebral glucose metabolism in bilateral rectal and subcallosal gyri, the medial convexity of right superior frontal gyrus, bilateral precuneus, right inferior parietal lobule, and in left supra

Cerebral perfusion changes during cataplexy in narcolepsy patients

SJR Q1Neurology

To localize cerebral perfusion differences during cataplexy, brain SPECT subtraction was performed between cataplexy and baseline awake period or REM sleep in patients with narcolepsy. During cataplexy, subtracted SPECT showed hyperperfusion in right amygdala, bilateral cingulate gyri, basal ganglia, thalami, premotor cortices, sensorimotor cortices, right insula, and brainstem, and hypoperfusion in prefrontal cortex and occipital lobe. This result suggests that cataplexy is produced by the acti

The present study aimed to examine the association between morningness-eveningness preferences, sleep duration, weekend catch-up sleep duration and depression among Korean high-school students. A total of 8,655 high-school students participated from 15 districts in South Korea and completed an online self-report questionnaire. The following sleep characteristics were assessed: weekday and weekend sleep duration, weekend catch-up sleep duration, morningness-eveningness preference, perceived suffi

SJR Q1Human Brain Mapping

We assessed structural brain damage in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA) patients (21 males) and the effects of long-term continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment (18.2 ± 12.4 months; 8-44 months) on brain structures and investigated the relationship between severity of OSA and effects of treatment. Using deformation-based morphometry to measure local volume changes, we identified widespread neocortical and cerebellar atrophy in untreated patients compared to controls (59 males;
