BACKGROUND: Nutritional support is critical for preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). A multidisciplinary nutritional support team (NST) that focuses on providing optimal and individualized nutrition care could be helpful. We conducted a thorough evaluation of clinical and nutritional outcomes in a tertiary NICU following the implementation of an NST. METHODS: This study used a retrospective approach with historical comparisons. Preterm neonates < 30 weeks gestational age o
BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammation is an important risk factor for neurodevelopmental impairments in preterm infants. Premyelinating oligodendrocytes are main building blocks of white matter in preterm infants and vulnerable to oxidative stress and excitotoxic stress. Tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) plays important roles in systemic inflammation and local inflammation leading to apoptosis of premyelinating oligodendrocytes and white matter injury (WMI) in brain tissue. This study was conducted t
The prevalence of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) and preeclampsia (PE) are 5-10% and 2-4%, respectively. PIH might affect angiogenesis in preterm neonates, but its association with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) remains controversial. This study evaluated the association between PIH and BPD in very low-birth weight infants. We retrospectively analysed the maternal, perinatal, and neonatal data of preterm infants born before 30 weeks of gestation, selected from the nationwide registry of
BACKGROUND: We retrospectively reviewed the outcomes of desmoid tumor (DT) patients treated by surgical excision. METHODS: Among 155 consecutive patients, 119 patients satisfied our inclusion criteria. The mean follow-up duration was 82 months. Age, gender, location, size, depth, resection margin, adjuvant radiotherapy, and excision history were analyzed for the outcomes. RESULTS: The recurrence-free survival (RFS) rates were 75% at 5 years and 72% at 10 years. Twenty-seven (93.1%) out of 29 rec
Differentiation of serious bacterial infection (SBI) from self-limiting viral illness in febrile infants younger than three months is a significant challenge for clinicians. We aimed to assess the risk factors for SBI in febrile infants. Data were obtained from 221 infants younger than three months who visited a single community referral hospital for fever and underwent a complete sepsis workup between August 2003 and July 2006. The causes of fever were febrile illness without a documented cause
Osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma compose most of the primary malignancies of the shoulder. The literature lacks site-specific comparative analyses of these 2 major shoulder sarcomas. The purposes of this study were to describe the different characteristics of the 2 major sarcomas near the glenohumeral joint, examine differences in treatment outcomes, and evaluate the functional outcomes of limb salvage surgery. Thirty-two patients with osteosarcoma or chondrosarcoma who underwent a wide resection
For mechanically ventilated preterm infants, the use of remifentanil at 0.25 μg/kg/min as an analgesic for short procedures represents a therapeutic option. Our pilot study suggests the need for larger randomized trials.
The high prevalence (3/5, 60%) of follicular thyroid carcinoma in patients with PPB who were treated with HDC and HSCT is striking. This suggests that, in patients with PPB, either HDC or HSCT contributes to the development of thyroid cancer. Clinicians should be advised of the high risk of thyroid carcinoma occurrence when HDC and HSCT are being contemplated in children with PPB.
Prematurity, size at birth, and postnatal growth are important factors that determine cardiometabolic and neurodevelopmental outcomes later in life. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the associations between the size at birth and growth velocity after birth with cardiometabolic and neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants. Fifty-six preterm infants born at < 32 weeks of gestation or having a birth weight of < 1500 g were enrolled and categorized into small for gestational age (
