15Two forms of cyclooxygenase are known to be present in eukaryotic organisms: a cyclooxygenase (COX-1) first purified from ram seminal vesicles encoded by a 2.8-kilobase mRNA, and a newly discovered mitogen-inducible cyclooxygenase (COX-2) encoded by a 4-kilobase mRNA. Expression of these two forms of the enzyme in rat alveolar macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide was investigated by 1) determining the activity of newly synthesized enzyme after inactivating the endogenous enzyme with as
Uniform 3 nm-sized ceria nanoparticles can protect against ischemic stroke by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reducing apoptosis. PEGylated ceria nanoparticles showed protective effects against ROS-induced cell death in vitro. Optimal doses of ceria nanoparticles reduced infarct volumes and the rate of ischemic cell death in vivo.
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory state of the gastrointestinal tract and can be classified into 2 main clinical phenomena: Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). The pathogenesis of IBD, including CD and UC, involves the presence of pathogenic factors such as abnormal gut microbiota, immune response dysregulation, environmental changes, and gene variants. Although many investigations have tried to identify novel pathogenic factors associated with IBD that are
Abstract The two oxidation states of ceria nanoparticles, Ce 3+ and Ce 4+ , play a pivotal role in scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS). In particular, Ce 3+ is largely responsible for removing O 2 − and . OH that are associated with inflammatory response and cell death. The synthesis is reported of 2 nm ceria–zirconia nanoparticles (CZ NPs) that possess a higher Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ ratio and faster conversion from Ce 4+ to Ce 3+ than those exhibited by ceria nanoparticles. The obtained Ce 0.7 Zr 0
BACKGROUND: Cerebral microbleeds (CMB) may be indicative of a hemorrhage-prone microangiopathy. OBJECTIVE: To determine if increased numbers of these lesions are predictive of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), especially in terms of a distributional association. METHODS: The authors examined consecutively 227 patients with acute stroke. CMB were counted using T2*-weighted gradient echo MRI data, and old lacunes and leukoaraiosis were also evaluated. The associations between the vascular risk facto
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Multifocal signal loss lesions (MSLLs) on T2*-weighted gradient-echo (GE) MRI are believed to be microbleeds histopathologically. Previous epidemiological studies suggested that low serum cholesterol is associated with the increased risk of intracerebral hemorrhage. We investigated risk factors of MSLLs and the relationship between lipid profiles and MSLLs on GE-MRI. METHODS: We included consecutively 172 patients who underwent brain MRI. MSLLs on GE-MRI were counted by 2
BACKGROUND: Cerebral microbleeds are known to be indicative of bleeding-prone microangiopathy and may predict incident intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). In this study, we investigated whether microbleeds are associated with the incidence of warfarin-related ICH. METHODS: Twenty-four patients with ICH while on outpatient treatment with warfarin were selected from a consecutive cohort. Control, warfarin-using subjects with no history of ICH were randomly selected during the same time period (n = 48)
Scientific Reports 6: Article number: 34617; published online: 06 October 2016; updated: 27 September 2017. This Article contains incorrect versions of Figure 3 and Figure 6. The correct Figures appear below as Figure 1 and 2 respectively. In addition, there are typographical errors in the Methods section under the subheading ‘Staining for confocal microscopy analysis’,
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is induced by complex hereditary and environmental factors. However, the mechanisms of ASD development are poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to identify standard indicators of this condition by comparing clinical, pathophysiological, and neurobehavioral features in an autism-like animal model. A total of 22 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into control and 500 mg/kg propionic acid (PPA)-treated groups. Rats were subjected to behavioral
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Heat-shock proteins (HSPs) are highly conserved proteins that are induced by a variety of stresses. HSP70 is a 70-kDa HSP family known to have cytoprotective effects against various insults. The role of HSP70 in cerebral ischemia remains to be elucidated in vivo. METHODS: To investigate the effect of reduced HSP70 levels on cerebral ischemia, focal cerebral ischemia by intraluminal occlusion of the middle cerebral artery was induced in hsp70.1 knockout mice. The expressio
