15The transient receptor potential channels (TRPs) respond to chemical irritants and temperature. TRPV1 responds to the itch-inducing endogenous signal histamine, and TRPA1 responds to the itch-inducing chemical chloroquine. We showed that, in sensory neurons, TRPV4 is important for both chloroquine- and histamine-induced itch and that TRPV1 has a role in chloroquine-induced itch. Chloroquine-induced scratching was reduced in mice in which TRPV1 was knocked down or pharmacologically inhibited. Bot
In this paper, we consider the problem of computing resonances in open systems. We first characterize resonances in terms of (improper) eigenfunctions of the Helmholtz operator on an unbounded domain. The perfectly matched layer (PML) technique has been successfully applied to the computation of scattering problems. We shall see that the application of PML converts the resonance problem to a standard eigenvalue problem (still on an infinite domain). This new eigenvalue problem involves an operat
A method for the synthesis of an aperture with improved bearing resolution and signal gain is described. The proposed method temporally synthesizes data from an overlap correlator, which is obtained by aperture domain averaging of phase differences. Previous studies, such as extended towed array measurements (ETAM), had a restriction in that the overlapped hydrophones between successive measurements of a towed array were required to have identical positions in space. In this paper, however, it i
Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are defined as tumor cells circulating in the peripheral blood of patients. CTCs have long been regarded as an attractive research topic. Because of recent technological advances, it is now possible to detect CTCs in the bloodstream. Interestingly, CTCs are present in both of patients with metastatic disease and early stage localized disease in patients with breast cancer. An assay detecting CTCs seems to have significant future potential value in the clinical mana
In this paper, we present a nonoverlapping optimized Schwarz algorithm with a high-order transmission condition for the Helmholtz equation posed in waveguides. We introduce the new high-order transmission conditions based on the complete radiation boundary conditions (CRBCs) that have been developed for high-order absorbing boundary conditions. We obtain the convergence rate of the algorithm in terms of reflection coefficients of CRBCs, which decrease exponentially with the order of CRBCs. It wi
Purpose: The optimum local surgical strategy regarding breast-conserving therapy (BCT) for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is controversial. To investigate whether BCT is appropriate for patients with TNBC, we evaluated the clinical outcomes of BCT in women with TNBC compared to those of women without TNBC, using a large, single-center cohort. Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of 1533 women (TNBC n=321; non-TNBC n=1212) who underwentBCT for primary breast cancer b
In this paper, we study finite element approximate solutions to the Helmholtz equation in waveguides by using a perfectly matched layer (PML). The PML is defined in terms of a piecewise linear coordinate stretching function with two parameters for absorbing propagating and evanescent components respectively, and truncated with a Neumann condition on an artificial boundary rather than a Dirichlet condition for cutoff modes that waveguides may allow. In the finite element analysis for the PML prob
Abstract Many large cities in Korea have either implemented or are planning to install a bus information system (BIS) in order to improve the quality of service for bus passengers. This is mainly being conducted by providing bus arrival times at bus stops. In these systems, similar systematic errors occur in the estimation of bus arrival times, which are influenced by the information updating time (cycle length) taken to identify each bus location, the information processing time, and the cycle
