15PURPOSE: Medulloblastoma, a malignant pediatric brain tumor, is incurable in about one third of patients despite multimodal treatments. In addition, current therapies can lead to long-term disabilities. Based on studies of the extensive tropism of neural stem cells (NSC) toward malignant gliomas and the secretion of growth factors common to glioma and medulloblastoma, we hypothesized that NSCs could target medulloblastoma and be used as a cellular therapeutic delivery system. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN
Young-age MMD demonstrates rapid disease progression and results in poor clinical outcomes. These findings indicate the necessity of early surgery for young patients with MMD; however, the actual benefits should be verified with additional controlled studies, with long-term follow-up monitoring.
A unique characteristic of neural stem cells is their capacity to track glioma cells that have migrated away from the main tumor mass into the normal brain parenchyma. PEX, a naturally occurring fragment of human metalloproteinase-2, acts as an inhibitor of glioma and endothelial cell proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis. In the present study, we evaluated the antitumor activity of PEX-producing human neural stem cells against malignant glioma. The HB1.F3 cell line (immortalized human neur
OBJECTIVE: We compared the surgical results of simple encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis (EDAS) and EDAS with bifrontal encephalogaleo(periosteal)synangiosis for the treatment of pediatric moyamoya disease. METHODS: Data for 159 children (up to 15 yr of age, 76 boys and 83 girls) who underwent indirect revascularization procedures for the treatment of moyamoya disease between 1987 and 1998 were retrospectively reviewed. Group A patients underwent simple EDAS (n = 67). Group B patients underwent EDA
The brainstem glioma-tropic migratory capacities of MSCs from various sources were similar to those of NSCs. Genetically engineered NSCs show therapeutic efficacy against brainstem gliomas.
Sox2 is a key transcription factor that maintains the proliferation of neuroglial stem cells and inhibits neuronal fate commitment. Moreover, it was recently found that brain tumors contain stem cells that resemble normal neuroglial stem cells in many respects. This study was undertaken to describe Sox2 expression in various brain tumors, and to determine whether Sox2 expression is a universal feature of brain tumors, or whether its expression is limited to a specific lineage of brain tumors. So
OBJECT: Ideal epilepsy surgery would eliminate seizures without causing any functional deficits. The aim of the present study was to assess seizure outcomes and complications after epilepsy surgery in children with intractable epilepsy. METHODS: Data obtained in 134 children (75 boys and 59 girls) age 17 years or younger who underwent epilepsy surgery at Seoul National University Children's Hospital between 1993 and 2005 were retrospectively reviewed. Epilepsy surgery included temporal resection
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The etiology of moyamoya disease (MMD) remains obscure. This study was undertaken to identify specific proteins associated with the pathogenesis of MMD. METHODS: We studied cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from 20 patients with angiographically confirmed MMD (4 boys and 16 girls; age range, 3 to 13 years; mean, 7.5 years) and 4 control patients with cerebral palsy who underwent selective dorsal rhizotomy (2 boys and 2 girls; age range, 5 to 10 years; mean, 7.3 years). CSF protei
BACKGROUND: Using a pathway-focused approach, we aimed to provide a subgroup-specific basis for finding novel therapeutic strategies and further refinement of the risk stratification in pediatric medulloblastoma. METHOD: Based on genome-wide Cox regression and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis, we investigated prognosis-related signaling pathways and core genes in pediatric medulloblastoma subgroups using 530 patient data from Medulloblastoma Advanced Genomic International Consortium (MAGIC) project.
Cystoperitoneal (CP) shunting is minimally invasive and achieves a high rate of resolution on neuroimaging. However, in the absence of definite symptoms, shunting should be reconsidered, because some patients can experience shunt dependency after CP shunting. In this study, the risk of shunt dependency in patients with arachnoid cysts treated with CP shunting and the management of these patients are described. Eight patients (7 boys and 1 girl) were diagnosed as shunt dependent following CP shun
