15Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) may hold great promise for treating diabetic wounds. However, it is difficult for a clinician to use MSCs because they have not been commercialized. Meanwhile, a new commercial drug that contains adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) has been developed. The purpose of this study was to examine the potential of allogeneic ASC sheets for treating diabetic foot ulcers. Fifty-nine patients with diabetic foot ulcers were randomized to either the ASC treatment group (n = 30)
Human processed lipoaspirate (PLA) cells are relatively easy to obtain in large quantities without cell culture. The purpose of this study was to present the possibility of using uncultured PLA cell autografts for the treatment of diabetic ulcers. An in vitro study was designed initially to determine the effect of PLA cell autografts on the proliferation and collagen synthesis of diabetic fibroblasts (n=4). In a subsequent clinical study, 26 patients with diabetic foot ulcers were treated using
Successful rhinoplasty depends on nasal tip support and its influence on nasal tip projection. It is generally agreed that the components of nasal tip support include the attachment between the upper and lower lateral cartilages, the attachment between the lateral crus of the lower lateral cartilage and the pyriform aperture, the attachment between the paired domes of the lower lateral cartilages, and the medial crural attachment to the caudal septum. However, these structures are still not clea
In Brief The purpose of this pilot study was to compare proliferation, collagen synthesis, and growth factor production, which are important contributing factors for wound healing, of the bone marrow stromal cells (BSCs) with those of dermal fibroblasts in vitro. Cultured human BSCs and dermal fibroblasts from the same patients were seeded in 96-well culture plates. At 1, 3, and 5 days postincubating, cell proliferation, collagen synthesis, and secretion of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF),
Diabetic foot ulcers are the main cause of non-traumatic lower extremity amputation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk factors for major amputation in diabetic foot patients. Eight hundred and sixty diabetic patients were admitted to the diabetic wound centre of the Korea University Guro Hospital for foot ulcers between January 2010 and December 2013. Among them, 837 patients were successfully monitored until complete healing. Ulcers in 809 patients (96·7%) healed without majo
Fingertip injuries represent the most common type of injuries seen in the upper extremity. Their management is functionally and aesthetically important but at the same time very controversial. The aim of this study is to report usefulness and postoperative results of reverse digital artery island flaps for fingertip reconstruction. From July of 1984 to December of 1995, 120 fingers in 110 patients with defects of the distal phalanx were reconstructed by reverse digital artery island flaps at Kor
A large number of silver-based dressings are commonly used in the management of chronic wounds that are at risk of infection, including diabetic foot ulcers. However, there are still controversies regarding the toxicity of silver dressings on wound healing. The purpose of this study was to objectively test the cytotoxicity of silver dressings on human diabetic fibroblasts. Human diabetic fibroblasts were obtained from the foot skin of four diabetic foot ulcer patients and cultured. The effect of
In a previous animal study, the authors reported that cultured human fibroblasts suspended in Restylane, which is a modified hyaluronic acid, can produce human dermal matrices with extended in vivo stability. This study was undertaken to evaluate the clinical efficacy of this method, particularly for augmentation rhinoplasty cases. Between January 2002 and June 2003, 11 patients were treated with subcutaneous implants of Restylane mixed with autologous fibroblasts for augmentation rhinoplasty. O
Diabetic foot ulcers often pose a difficult treatment problem. Repeated applications of cell-based products have been reported to result in acceleration of diabetic wound healing. The purpose of this clinical trial study was to report preliminary findings of the efficacy and safety of the cultured allogeneic keratinocyte sheets in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. Fifty-nine patients with diabetic foot ulcers were randomized to either the keratinocyte treatment group (n = 27) or the control
A comparative study was undertaken to evaluate a new microvascular anastomosis technique utilizing only four sutures placed 90 degrees apart and sealed with fibrin glue, in contrast to the conventional method of eight sutures as a control. The two methods were compared in regard to patency rates, time needed for vascular anastomosis, and microscopic evaluation. Postoperative patency rates were 100% and 85% with the fibrin glue technique compared with 100% and 90% with the conventional technique
To overcome venous congestion in fingertip replantation with no venous anastomosis, the authors have used a salvage procedure that consists of continuous external bleeding through a stab incision on the paraungual area and dripping a heparinized saline solution at the incision site to maintain external bleeding. Because this method requires continuous bleeding for a certain period of time, it may be a great burden on the patient; therefore, it is most important to minimize the duration of bleedi
Diabetic foot ulcers often pose a difficult problem for health care professionals because of the defects associated with fibroblast functioning. Although there has been much interest recently in the use of topical growth factors for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, the effects are generally not very dramatic. Cryopreserved fibroblast implants, which are able to adjust to a wound's environment and provide the desired growth factors and other substances that may be lacking in a chronic wound
Various types of skin substitutes composed of fibroblasts and/or keratinocytes have been used for the treatment of diabetic ulcers. However, the effects have generally not been very dramatic. Recently, human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (hUCB-MSCs) have been commercialised for cartilage repair as a first cell therapy product using allogeneic stem cells. In a previous pilot study, we reported that hUCB-MSCs have a superior wound-healing capability compared with fibroblas
