Exploring the equality of accessing urban green spaces: A comparative study of 341 Chinese cities
Longfeng Wu, Seung Kyum Kim
SJR Q1Ecological IndicatorsOA

Despite multiple benefits of green space for urban residents, the investigations on equality of access to green space are scarce. Most focused on individual cities and the results were inconsistent due to the varying definitions, scales, and evaluation methods employed within each. This study intends to address this gap by developing two indexes based on the Gini Coefficient to compare the inequality of access to urban green spaces across all 341 prefecture-level cities of China. An urban green

Do the characteristics of new green space contribute to gentrification?
Seung Kyum Kim, Longfeng Wu
SJR Q1Urban Studies

A number of recent studies have examined the socioeconomic functions and side effects of environmental amenity in urban development. In this study, an urban green space is viewed as both a positive and negative environmental externality because it could be a potential contributor to gentrification. Employing the difference-in-differences method at the public use microdata areas and census-tract level, this study examines the effects of new green space characteristics on multiple gentrification i

Urban agglomeration worsens spatial disparities in climate adaptation
Seung Kyum Kim, Mia M. Bennett, Terry van Gevelt, Paul Joosse
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Many countries promote urban agglomeration to enhance economic competitiveness, but the impacts of this strategy on local climate adaptation remain poorly understood. Here, we use variation in greenspaces to test the effectiveness of climate adaptation policy across climate impacts and vulnerability dimensions. Using satellite imagery and logistic regression, we analyze spatiotemporal correlation between greenspace and climate vulnerability in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, an a

The Economic Effects of Climate Change Adaptation Measures: Evidence from Miami-Dade County and New York City
Seung Kyum Kim
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

This research examines the economic impact of climate change adaptation measures on the housing markets of two representative coastal cities in the United States located along the Atlantic Ocean. The results shed light on how adaptation measures and investments influence housing values and local real estate markets with respect to their place-based and local forms of implementation. Numerous quantitative approaches, with the use of geospatial data, panel-data hedonic regressions, and difference-

The implication of the increase in storm frequency and intensity to coastal housing markets
Seung Kyum Kim, Richard Peiser
SJR Q1Journal of Flood Risk ManagementOA

Abstract This paper analyzes the effects of storm frequency and intensity on housing values in Miami‐Dade County over the last three decades. We found that higher storm exposure accelerates the housing price discount caused by augmented flood risk. The adverse effects of frequency and intensity have different impacts on perception of flood probabilities. Storm frequency affects housing prices in lower flood risk areas, whereas intensity influences the market in the higher risk zone, due to the d

How Are Green Spaces Distributed among Different Social Groups in Urban China? A National Level Study
Longfeng Wu, Seung Kyum Kim
SJR Q1ForestsOA

The study analyzes the distributional equity of urban green space (UGS) among different social groups across all urban areas in China. Urban green space is measured in two ways: Park area per capita and vegetation coverage ratio within 1.6 km and 3.2 km featuring different ecosystem services they provide. Multiple regression analyses are conducted to assess relationships between different groups (children, the elderly, and migrant populations) and distributed UGS. Largely consistent to other nat
