15Background: Transmission heterogeneity was observed during the 2015 South Korean outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection. Only 22 of 186 cases transmitted the infection, and 5 super-spreading events caused 150 transmissions. We investigated the risk factors for MERS-CoV transmission. Methods: Epidemiological reports were used to classify patients as non-spreaders, spreaders (1-4 transmission), or those associated with super-spreading event (≥4 transmissions)
This study showed that patients with dementia with Lewy bodies had a greater burden of cerebral microbleeds and exhibited a lobar predominance of cerebral microbleeds than did patients with Parkinson disease dementia.
Importance: A proportion of people with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) have a relapsing disease course and persistent anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein immunoglobulin G (MOG-IgG) seropositivity. Few studies have investigated whether treatment of the first MOGAD attack is associated with the long-term disease course and/or MOG-IgG seronegative conversion. Objective: To investigate the association of time to treat the first acute MOGAD attack with re
An early diagnosis and initiation of the appropriate antibiotics can reduce the mortality of melioidosis. Consequently, increased awareness of the risk factors and clinical features of melioidosis is required.
The tumor microenvironment comprises both tumor and non-tumor stromal cells, including tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), endothelial cells, and carcinoma-associated fibroblasts. TAMs, major components of non-tumor stromal cells, play a crucial role in creating an immunosuppressive environment by releasing cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, and immune checkpoint proteins that inhibit T cell activity. During tumors develop, cancer cells release various mediators, including chemokines and me
Tannic acid (TA) is a polyphenolic compound that exerts protective effects under pathological conditions. The diverse mechanisms of TA can exert beneficial anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer effects. Herein, we reported that TA affords robust neuroprotection in an animal model of stroke (transient middle cerebral artery occlusion; tMCAO) and exhibits Zn2+-chelating and anti-oxidative effects in primary cortical neurons. Following tMCAO induction, intravenous administra
Approximately 1% of the patients with suspected BD exhibited NBD. Neurologists must understand the clinical characteristics of NBD in order to perform the differential diagnosis and management of these patients.
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder that affects the neuromuscular junctions, resulting in muscle weakness and fatigue. Muscle weakness, restricted mobility, and frequent use of corticosteroids in patients with MG may predispose them to a higher risk of fractures. However, studies on the impact of MG on bone health and the associated fracture risk are scarce. Utilizing claim database of the Korean National Health Insurance Service collected between 2002 and 2020, we compared the ris
To assess whether older age and presence of comorbidities were associated with a delayed diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). The medical records of 140 patients diagnosed with GBS at Severance Hospital from March 2011 to December 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Comorbidity profiles were assessed using the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI). The age-adjusted CCI (ACCI) score was calculated, which further incorporated the effect of age. Patients were classified into the early diagnosis g
Abnormal RNS responses primarily in facial muscles without involvement of limb muscles were more pronounced in MuSK MG than in DSN MG. RNS of both facial and limb muscles in AChR-Ab-negative MG can increase the test sensitivity and aid in early suspicion of MuSK MG.
